How to open, edit and convert IES files. An IES file extension file is an IES photometric file that stands for Lighting Engineering Society . These are simple text files that contain light data for architectural programs that can simulate light.
Lighting manufacturers can publish IES files to describe how their products are affected by different structures. A program that uses an IES file can interpret this to understand how to show the right light patterns in things like roads and buildings.
An IES file, in the context of lighting design and computer graphics, stands for “Illuminating Engineering Society” file. This file format is a standard digital file used to describe the light distribution of real-world light sources. The data contained in an IES file is typically measured by manufacturers of lighting equipment and is used by architects, lighting designers, and engineers to model the distribution of light from various fixtures in simulated environments. Here’s a general overview of what an IES file contains:
- Photometric Data: This is the core of the IES file. It includes detailed information about how a light source distributes light in space. This data is usually presented in a series of vertical and horizontal angles and corresponding candela values, which represent the intensity of light at those angles.
- Metadata: The file also contains metadata about the light source, such as manufacturer information, catalog number, lamp type, and other details relevant to the light fixture.
- Geometric Information: Some IES files include data about the physical dimensions of the light fixture, which can be useful for accurate placement and visualization in 3D modeling software.
- File Format Structure: An IES file is a text-based file, typically starting with identifiers like “IESNA:LM-63-1995” or similar, indicating the standard it adheres to. It is followed by metadata and then the photometric data in a structured, tabular format.
In practical applications, IES files are used in lighting simulation software to accurately represent how specific light fixtures will illuminate a space. This allows designers to predict and visualize the lighting effects in architectural and interior design projects before any physical installation. By using IES files, a more realistic and accurate lighting design can be achieved, which is particularly useful for complex or critical lighting situations.
How to open an IES file
- IES files can be opened using lighting analysts’ photometric toolkits, Autodesk architecture and Revit software, RenderZone from AutoDesSys, AcuityBrand’s visual lighting software, and LTI Optics Photopia.
- Note. If you need help using an IES file in Revit, see the Autodesk tutorial on how to set an IES file for a light source.
- The IES file can also be opened via the free IES Viewer as well as AcuityBrand’s visual photometric tool.
- A simple word processing program, such as Notepad for Windows or one of our best lists of free text editors , can also open IES files because the files are in plain text. Doing so lets you see a visual representation of the data, but the content of the text.
Note: ISE files share the same letters as the file with the .IES extension. However, the ISE files are either InstallShield Express Project files or Xilinx ISE Project files; they open in InstallShield and ISE Design Suite, respectively. The EIB file extension is similar, but instead of the image files created by Capture One.
If you find that an application on your computer is trying to open an IES file, but it’s the wrong application, or if you want to use another installed program to open an IES file, see our How to change a specific file extension guide to the default program for this change in Windows.
How to Convert an IES File
- With this Internet converter, you can convert an IES file to an EULUMDAT (.LDT) file. You can also do the opposite and convert LDT to IES. Eulumdat tools should be able to do the same thing, but it works on your desktop instead of a web browser.
- PhotoView is not free, but you can convert IES files to formats such as LDT, CIE, and LTL.
- The free IES Viewer mentioned above can save the file to BMP.
- Although this is probably not helpful, you can convert the IES file to another text-based format using Notepad ++ mentioned above.
- The free DIALux program can open ULD files, which are Unified Lighting Data Files – a format similar to IES. You may be able to import the IES file into this program and then save it as a ULD file.
Learn more about IES
The IES file format is called because of the lighting society. In order to better shape lighting conditions in the real world, there is a society that brings together lighting experts (eg lighting designers, consultants, engineers, sales representatives, architects, researchers, lighting equipment manufacturers, etc.).
It is the IES that has ultimately influenced the creation of various standards for some lighting applications, such as those used in healthcare facilities, sports, offices, and so on. Even the National Institute of Standards and Technology has referred to IES publications Optical Radiation Calibration.
