What is a competency interview?

Your next interview could be like this!

When you send your CV to a company, you are convinced of fulfilling the requirements of the vacancy, but when you get to the interview, are you sure of what you know to keep the position?

Speaking from the HR point of view, a “competence” is a set of capacities (knowledge, abilities, attitudes and motivations) that help to apply learning in a given context.

It is not the same interview as always

You arrive to the work appointment on time, while you wait in reception you remember the recommendations for a job interview: body language , smiling, saying hello, looking into the eyes, etc.

Minutes later the recruiter makes an appearance and asks you to accompany him to an evidence room. The RH executive explains that this interview will be different, before moving on to the personal interview to get to know yourself a little more, you will do a “little exercise”.

In this exercise, you will test the skills you have for the vacancy in a somewhat real environment. Nerves take over you. Is it the interview you expected? Not at all.

What is a competency interview?

It is a personnel selection process in which the behavior of a person in a given situation is evaluated. Usually they are based on realities that can be lived in the day to day of companies.

For companies, it is a fast and effective method of filtering talent, since it not only investigates studies or work experience, it allows exploring the potential of people in real time and can discover other candidate skills.

What are some competencies that could evaluate you?

  • Advice, support and customer service
  • Attention and listen
  • Dynamism and sense of urgency
  • Implementation
  • Competitive results orientation
  • Strategic orientation to results
  • Persuasion and extroversion
  • Accuracy – quality
  • Proactivity and independence
  • Monitoring of standards and policies

Tips for a competition interview

1.- Analyze the vacancy you applied for

Many times companies show the activities to be performed and the skills they are looking for. This can help you imagine real work situations, determine what to do and what not to do, and create strategies for when they ask you how you would solve a problem.

2.- Know yourself

If you know what your strengths are, you can use them to your advantage to think about how to highlight them when they ask you questions like “If this happened, what would you do?”

For this it would be convenient to do a personal SWOT analysis beforehand

3.- Be honest and trust what you know

Like everything in life, nerves can work against you. If you have knowledge or a lot of experience in a position, a topic, a software, but in the interview you do not demonstrate it, it is likely that you will get a bad result.
