Detailed walkthrough of the only story add-on for the first part of the series
Left Behind is the only story add-on released for the first part of The Last of Us. It expands on the original story and recounts events from Ellie’s past.

The plot of this add-on ties in the events that took place between the original game’s Science Center and The Hunt chapters, and is also a prequel that recounts the events up to the 20 Years Later chapter. At the beginning of the game, you will see Ellie studying at the agency, learn about her relationship with Riley. After a lengthy intro cutscene, you will gain control of Ellie, who will end up in the mall. The main character’s backpack contains all those artifacts and pendants of Cicadas that you could get in the “Hunting” chapter of the original game. They do not count toward the total collectible counter for this expansion. Go up the stairs ahead and take the hallway to the right of the statue, towards Weston’s Pharmacy. Despite the sounds of the infected nearby, the monsters do not pose an immediate threat, so there is no need to panic. Crawl under the door and climb into the pharmacy.
Try to open the back door for workers (Only Staff), which will be locked. Collect collectibles, look around, and then exit the same way you came here. Enter the nearby American Princess shop. If you find an artifact with a code, then Ellie will automatically enter it. Make your way under the shutters and go inside. There is a lot of controversy here, but the girl is immune. Find the Infected at the far back wall. As soon as you interact with them in the American Princess, Ellie will receive the key to the pharmacy (another artifact) needed to progress through the story.
Exit the American Princess the same way you came in, don’t stand up to your full height as there is a nutcracker outside. Stealth kill him, return to Weston’s drugstore and open the door studied earlier. The first aid kit will be empty, but Ellie will notice the helicopter of the military. Jump out the window back to the mall and get to the Pixitek store on your right. There are two ways to get here, although the tunnel is blocked by debris. Climb up the snow and follow the path to the Rarity Nail Salon. Take the first aid kit lying near the corpse and go down the stairs in front. As soon as you jump in, a flashback of the events that took place in the mall will begin.
Adventures in the mall
You will switch to Riley’s memories. Follow Riley up the stairs and down the corridor. Make your way under the boarded up doorframe to get into the apartment and search the area. Keep following Riley into the next room and climb up the closet to the next floor. Walk along the wall, through the kitchen to the bedroom. Follow Riley, under the rubble, and then head down the corridor and up the stairs. Get out through the window to be on the rooftops. As soon as you go down, Riley will order you to hide from the military. Once they’re gone, walk across the wooden plank to the nearby rooftop, follow Riley forward and climb into the hole. You’ve almost made it to the mall! Head down the stairs to an area full of boutiques.
Eventually, you will reach a blocked passage to the right of where the horse saddle was. Riley will ask for help – you need to pick up some debris, so hold down the indicated key. The way forward is still inaccessible, so look out for the Halloween shop on the right. Open the door, put on the wolf mask and press the indicated key to imitate his bestial roar.
When you’re ready to leave the shop, go through the double doors and you’ll be on the balcony above the carousel. Riley will point to the cars below. Take the nearest brick and throw it at the windows. To get the Brick Master achievement, you will have to break a total of six windows. Follow Riley through the double doors, down the stairs to the utility room. She will try to start the generator. Return to Riley and click on the generator switch. Follow Riley to the double door at the end of the corridor and talk to her before returning to the mall.
So close
After the flashback of the events at the mall, you will return to the present. Ellie spotted the helicopter. Gather various supplies, and once you’ve ransacked the area, follow the yellow cables on the ground to a dark corridor where you’ll run into a cat. The wire leads to a locked door, so follow the hallway to the flooded area. It’s not deep here, which is good, because Ellie can’t swim. Go through the doorway on the left side to enter a room with a parked truck. Use the ramp to find the generator. You need to start it, but it will not work without fuel.
Fortunately, there is a canister and a tube opposite the generator – grab both items. Remember the truck you spotted earlier? Return to him. There are about four infected here, but they do not pose a serious threat. Collect various ammunition. Try to drain the gasoline from the red car, but the tank will be empty. Go to the white car opposite and try again. Return to the generator with a full canister and pour fuel into it. Start the generator, which will attract the infected, but they will be delayed by water.
Go through the gate behind you. Before you climb the stairs, you can pick up a Molotov cocktail. Carefully crawl through the vents, avoiding the electrified water. Once you can’t move any further, jump into the red truck and head back to safety. There are first aid kits in the trailer of the white truck. Open the garage door on the right and search the room. After that, open other roleta, but on the left side. There will be a cart here that you can move. Place it under the valve of the right garage door. Climb onto the boxes and follow the valve to the air conditioning unit. Crawl through the vents to the exit from the loading bay and drop down next to the pet store’s double doors. Pick up ammo from the floor and reload the weapon, and then go to the pet store.
You will encounter many infected. Stealth kill the first of them, on the left hand side. Wait for the nutcracker to enter the office and cut him down. Move into the main hall of the pet store, slowly killing each infected until you clear the location. After that, spend time looking for supplies, reload weapons and craft the necessary gadgets. Then go through the shutters in front of the pet shop. You are back where you started and you will find yourself in front of a medical helicopter. Nutcrackers roam nearby. The easiest way to deal with them is to throw a Molotov cocktail and then finish them off with a pistol. Once you’re done, a couple of runners will spawn, so get rid of them as well. Pay attention to the yellow cable seen earlier. It is now receiving power, so use the door panel to get through the gate. Climb up the stairs with the Colorado Mountain Plaza sign, at the top go to the left side, into the tent with supplies. When you’re done, head back up the snowy hill to the helicopter and climb onto the glass platform. Walk along the metal beam and jump into the helicopter, which will trigger another memory.
Jokes and pranks
You will return to the mall again with Riley, back to the events that ended in the “Mall Adventures” chapter. After turning on the power and running the escalator in front of the carousel, go up and see the Raja’s game room. The first thing to do is go to Jak X in the back left side of the game center. Ellie will try out the steering wheel and other controls while pretending to play. You will receive another achievement. Then approach another piece of equipment on the right called The Turning. Interact with him to start a fun mini-game. All you need to do is match the tooltips with the buttons that appear in the lower left corner of the screen. Click on them without error to unlock another trophy.
Follow the corridor, make your way under the rubble and move past the creepy mannequins. Go through the double door at the very end and enter the storage room with more mannequins. Head to the other double door, go through it and meet up with Riley. Watch the video.
In the first part of the water pistol fight, pump it up and spray Riley until her wet meter fills up. Hide behind cover as if you were fighting bandits or clickers. Once you defeat your friend, she will hide from Ellie. Use stealth and track her down. Use listening mode to determine Riley’s position and surprise her. After wetting a friend and defeating her a second time, you will receive a challenge for the third round. Get down and take your time. Riley will try to storm your positions herself. By winning the competition, you will receive another achievement. When the game is over, the memory will also stop.
Enemy of my enemy
You will wake up in the medical helicopter that you snuck into in “So Close”. Move forward gathering supplies until you see Octopus Records at the end of the corridor. Keep moving until a cut-scene starts, in which bandits and clickers run out of the store. Pick up the fallen bow and destroy the three bandits. There are a lot of shelters, so there will be no problems, especially since the enemies are usually dispersed throughout the location. Archery does not make noise, so any kill with it will be considered stealth. Search Octopus Records and the dead thugs for supplies, then follow the bloody trail on the ground behind the record store and make your way through the vent.
Turn around at the dead body where the artifact lies, go left, then right until you reach the part of the ventilation where it goes down. Keep moving and soon you will reach a room with infected and bandits. Take a brick and throw it at the thugs so that the infected will attack them, and you can go further and earn an achievement. When the chaos settles down, go down and finish off the remaining targets. Search the store and collect supplies.
Return to the main corridor of the mall. Unfortunately, you need to look for a workaround. The shop on the right side of the hallway called Great Plains is the only option, so climb onto the vending machines and make your way through the hole in the wall. As you move deeper into the store, Ellie will hear the sounds of the infected coming from the room to the right. Bandits will appear in front. Throw a bottle or a brick between the monsters and thugs to set one against the other. Finish off the remaining enemies and collect supplies.
When you’re ready, make your way through the large hole the bandits came out of, and when you’re at the top, raise the metal shutters. You will return to approximately the place where you found yourself in the very first chapter of “Be Back Soon”, although there will still be several enemy groups ahead. Heal yourself, reload your weapon and craft a gadget. Then head to the stairs, gathering the remaining supplies. A squad of bandits will appear trying to get to Joel, so you need to act quickly. Instead of going up the stairs, stealthily kill the thug who enters the shop from the front. Jump off the crates to the bottom floor. There will be more bandits in front of Swirl’s Yogurt Shop: kill them with a bow or a pistol. If you are discovered, be careful not to let the enemies flank you. After clearing the location, return to Joel. Try to raise the blinds in front of the Swirl Yogurt Shop. Unfortunately, another enemy group will appear. This will be a difficult battle. It is best to climb the yellow stairs opposite the main elevator and close the distance by taking a comfortable position. Finish off the enemies, find a hunting rifle on one of the corpses. Then the infected will appear. A three-way battle will begin. As before, you can use bottles and bricks to set the infected on the thugs. Kill everyone and go to Swirl’s Frozen Yogurt shop to move on to another memory.
The escape
It’s time to find out how Ellie and Riley’s walk at the mall ended. Once you gain control of Ellie, follow Riley. After she barricades the door, help her lift the large metal shutters. On the other side you will find a cart: move it so as to open the door for Riley. Now – run! Follow the trailer above, up the ramp and under the rubble. Get away from the runner and keep moving forward. Help Riley by attacking the infected that grabbed her, then run up the stairs and leave the building through the main door. Jump over the abyss and get to the roof. Climb up the scaffolding. When Riley gets recaptured, slit your throat infected
