Why do we use tar for protecting wooden fencing and posts placed in the ground ?

Wooden sheds, railings, posts and any structures which are to be exposed to the weather are usually
covered with a coating of tar, because water and tar do not mix. The water runs off the surface, and cannot
penetrate through the tar and rot the wood underneath. In the manufacture of coal-gas, the tar sinks to the bottom of the water-tank because it is heavier than water and does not mix with it.
