The University of Melbourne is a public university located in the city of Melbourne ( Australia ). Founded in 1853 , it is the second oldest university in Australia, and the largest in the Victoria province.

Geographic situation

Its central campus is located in Parkville , a suburb located north of Melbourne’s central business district. The institution also has several other campuses located throughout the state. He is a member of the “Group of Eight” Australian universities, Universitas 21 and the Association of Universities of the Pacific Rim. It currently has the highest funding among the country’s universities, with 1100 million Australian dollars in 2009

History review

The University of Melbourne was established by Hugh Childers, Founded in 1853, the Auditor General and Chancellor of the Exchequer, in his first budget speech on November 4 , 1852 , who set aside a sum of £ 10,000 for the establishment of a university. The university was established by the act of incorporating the 22 of January of 1853 , with the power to grant degrees in arts, medicine, law and music. The law provides for an annual endowment of £ 9,000, while a special concession of £ 20,000 was made for buildings for that year. The first stone was laid on July 3 , 1854, and on the same day the foundation stone for the state library, Classes began in 1855 with three professors and sixteen students; Of this student body, only four graduated. The original buildings were officially opened by the Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Victoria, Sir Charles Hotham , on October 3 , 1855 . The first chancellor, Redmond Barry Sir Redmond , served until his death in 1880.

The opening of the university was made possible by the wealth resulting from the Victoria Gold Rush. The institution was designed to be a “civilizing influence” at a time of rapid establishment and commercial growth.

In 1881, the admission of women was seen as a victory over the more conservative ruling council

According to the 2010 world ranking of universities by the British magazine Times Higher Education, the University of Melbourne is considered the best university in Australia and Oceania, and ranks it in 36th place worldwide. On the other hand, at the national level, it is recognized as the second leading research university after the “Organization for Industrial and Scientific Research of the CISRO Commonwealth . In 2008, more than 653 million dollars were invested and it has been consistently ranked among the Australia’s top two leading research institutions , data that is used by the Australian Government to designate public funding for infrastructure and research.

The institution has more than 35,000 students in total, who are supported by more than 7,200 academic and professional officials. In 2008, it introduced the controversial “Melbourne Model”, a combination of various practices from American and European universities, in order to be consistent with the Bologna process and achieve international relevance and stability in the degrees offered. Currently the vice chancellor of the university is Professor Glyn Davis AC
