How Many Types of Intelligence exist? Science has Answers

9 types of intelligence you should know.Intelligence is not a one-dimensional resource . There are those who are particularly good in mathematics, some in languages and some in human relationships.These natural propensities reflect the type of intelligence that most characterizes us. The first to theorize the multiformity of intelligence was the developmental psychologist Howard Gardner who, in his 1983 book ” Frames of mind “, accurately described the nine types of intelligence that an individual can possess.

You’re smart? The right answer is How, not How much. There are, in fact, nine forms of Intelligence, particularly different from each other, each of which leads to the activation of specific brain areas. Each of us has skills and abilities that arise from a connection and fusion of these heterogeneous – and often discordant – Intelligences.

There is no single model of human intelligence , and perhaps not everyone knows this.
Because we refer to the brain capacity basically from the quantitative point of view . And, therefore, everyone to measure their IQ .Since the end of the 19th century, when Francis Galton , cousin of the more famous Charles Darwin , began to study how human intelligence could be calculated. Hereditary factors and environmental factors – growing in the midst of ever new stimuli to increase curiosity and the intellectual approach – come together in specifying that number of IQs that many, everyone cares about.

 Types of Intelligence Described In The ” Theory of Multiple Intelligence

  • Naturalist;
  • Musical;
  • Logical-mathematical;
  • Existential;
  • Interpersonal;
  • Bodily-kinesthetics;
  • Linguistics;
  • Intrapersonal;

Now let’s see specifically what these types of intelligence consist of and how to recognize the one that best reflects your attitudes.

Naturalistic intelligence

The naturalist intelligence is knowing how to distinguish and classify the natural elements (plants and flowers) and grasp the relationship between them.This type of sensitivity was particularly useful in our evolutionary past, where we were hunters and farmers.To date, naturalistic intelligence is typical of biologists, astronomers, anthropologists and chefs .

Musical intelligence

Those who possess musical intelligence are able to recognize the pitch of sounds and discern timbres and rhythms . The ability to modulate the voice and the aptitude for sound of a musical instrument are among the peculiarities of this form of intelligence.

This intelligence is located in the right hemisphere of the brain, even though subjects with a wide musical culture process the melodies in the left hemisphere.

Musical intelligence is usually found in composers, conductors, vocalists and singers .

Logical-mathematical intelligence

Logical-mathematical intelligence involves both cerebral hemispheres: the left one, which recalls mathematical symbols, and the right one, which takes care of constructing and elaborating concepts.

The typical characteristics of this form of intelligence refer to the ability to calculate, measure and perform extremely complex mathematical operations . Those in possession of it are attracted to arithmetic, experiments and games of logic.

Logical-mathematical intelligence is typical of scientists, technologists and engineers.

Existential intelligence

Existential intelligence consists in the ability to face existential issues with clarity , asking questions related to great abstract concepts such as the nature of man, the meaning of life, why we are here.

It is typical of psychologists , philosophers and, in part, also of physicists.

Interpersonal intelligence

Interpersonal intelligence is the ability to understand and interact with others effectively. Those who possess it use their empathic abilities to connect with others, understand their fears, feelings and needs.

Interpersonal intelligence is usually found in teachers, political leaders, sociologists and entrepreneurs .

Body-kinesthetic intelligence

Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence consists in knowing how to wisely use one’s body in the most disparate contexts. Who owns it has strong coordination skills and a great aptitude for handling objects.

It is typical of athletes, artisans, dancers and surgeons.

Linguistic intelligence

Linguistic intelligence is linked to the ability to use a clear and extensive vocabulary . This form of intelligence makes it possible to translate more or less simple concepts into words, as well as to understand and associate even the most complex terms with extreme simplicity.

Those with linguistic intelligence love to write, read and dabble with crosswords.

It is typical of novelists, poets, journalists, linguists and speakers .

Intrapersonal intelligence

Intrapersonal intelligence is the ability to fully understand oneself , identify one’s thoughts and feelings and use them to achieve better results in individual life.

Actors , spiritual leaders , psychologists and philosophers usually possess this intelligence .

Spatial intelligence

Spatial intelligence consists in knowing how to recognize shapes and objects in space . Who owns it is able to remember even the smallest details, has great orientation skills and can recognize three-dimensional objects starting from complex patterns.

It is typical of sculptors, sailors, pilots, painters and architects .

Gardner’s theories about the existence of multiple forms of intelligence are still the subject of debate in the scientific community. At the center of the debate, the possibility that these forms of intelligence are, in reality, configurable as only  skills .Usually, these forms of intelligence are innate , but can be acquired and refined over time through exercise .Knowing how to recognize the intelligence closest to our attitudes allows us not only to understand which studies to undertake to develop it, but also in which direction to work to make the most of it and achieve a successful life.
