1. Operational Communication.

All communications originated to facilitate the operation of the organization or incurred as a result of its operation. 2. Situational Communication.

All communications created to deal with a specific situation or circumstance. These include most business letters and memos; telephone, teletype, and telegraph messages; non-institutional business and industrial journalism; conferences; staff meetings, and problem-solving discussions; most research; engineering, financial, and accounting reports; technical writing of most kinds; evaluation reports; demonstrations; conventions; and so forth.

3. Institutional Communication.

All communications created or required to further the customer, employee, and public relations goals of the organization. Within this classification, we would find most public relations communications, publicity, annual reports, promotional literature, goodwill “missiles,” descriptive literature, much business and industrial journalism, much nonverbal communication (such as the appearance of the building, its employees, cleanliness, etc.), letterheads and some other forms, employee and employment interviews and publications, pay-check inserts, non-operational films, etc.While this classification may be helpful in understanding the scope of administrative communication, the communication problems within each classification are basically the same.

Communication Based on Individual Roles

Individuals have an important role in the communication process. There are three types of communication which are differentiated based on individual roles, below are the explanations.

  1. Communication between individuals and other individuals, this type of communication can occur formally, non-formally or even informally. In this type of communication between individuals and other individuals, each individual can act as a communicator who is able to influence other individuals.
  2. Communication between individuals with a wider environmental coverage. This second type of communication based on individual roles occurs because an individual has a high ability to be able to establish relationships with a wider environment, even outside the scope of his/her environment.
  3. Communication between individuals and a group or more. In this type of communication, individuals have a role as intermediaries between two or more groups. So the individual who becomes the intermediary is required to have excellent abilities to become a harmonizer who creates a harmonious situation.

Work Network Communication

Work network communication can occur within a company or organization. This type of communication can be carried out in accordance with the system that has been established in the work network. According to its form, work network communication can be divided into three forms as follows.

  • Chain network communication is communication that can occur in accordance with the hierarchical channels of the organization with a network of command, so that chain network communication occurs by following the pattern of formal communication.
  • Circular network communication is communication that can occur through a communication channel with a shape that resembles a circle pattern.
  • Star network communication, a form of star network communication is communication that occurs through one center and the channels traversed are generally shorter.

Visual Communication

The last type of communication is visual communication. This type of communication is a non-verbal communication process that uses visuals to convey messages and information, such as hair styles, make-up styles and even clothing styles. Similar to non-verbal communication, visual communication is carried out without uttering a single word or sentence. However, the difference is that visual communication is carried out without gestures or facial expressions which are commonly used in non-verbal communication.
