Stojka eyebrow. She was an Austrian writer, musician and painter of the Roma ethnic group (that is, gypsy), a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust .

Biographical synthesis

He born in Steiermark, the 23 of March of 1933 , in a gypsy named “Lovari ‘, belonging to the gypsy group of Lovara, horse originally nomadic merchants. He remembers having a happy childhood in the middle of nature, traveling with his family through the Austrian fields .

Nomadism was finally banned them after the Germany of Hitler annexing Austria, so in 1939 the Stojka parked the car on the outskirts of Vienna and created a log cabin. Ceija was barely eight years old when, in 1941 , he saw the Gestapo men arrive in search of his father. They took him away to assassinate him in the Dachau concentration camp . A few months later the Nazi agents reappeared, this time to deport the rest of the family. The carriages of the train that took them to Auschwitz As if they were shipments of cattle, they were so full that, during the long journey, the little girl could not even bend down, according to her autobiography.

Trajectory

She was interned with her family in the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen , and was a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust.

At the end of World War II , after having endured the horrors of the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Ravensbrück and Bergen Belsen, he learned that his mother and four of his five brothers were the only survivors of a family clan of 200 people.

I survived by eating paper and pieces of skin.

In 1988 Ceija Stojka wrote the first Romani autograph of the Nazi persecution with the title, We live in isolation: the memories of a Roma . It was a cry of warning about the silenced persecution of the gypsies, as she herself commented:

I started writing because I had to open up, scream.

Painter’s eyebrow

In 1989 at the age of 56 he began to paint using his fingers or sticks instead of brushes. Also most of his pictorial work reflects the horrors of Nazism. His work was exhibited in Europe , Japan and the US . In 2005 the Jewish Museum in Vienna organized an exhibition entitled “Ceija Stojka, Leben”.

Death

He died on 28 of January of 2013 , at the age of 79 in a hospital in Vienna (Austria).

Awards
