SONY bets on Virtual Reality on PS5: this is how its new controls are

Virtual reality is a market that at the moment is a niche, but it gives unmatched experiences and has enormous potential. That is why the different participants have not given their arm to twist. Among them SONY where their commitment to virtual reality is unique in consoles and they intend to continue it this generation. A recent confirmation of a new PS VR is added the presentation of its Controller VR for it.

A few weeks ago SONY surprised us all with the announcement that their HMD unit or Virtual Reality glasses for their PlayStation 4 are going to have an improved version for PlayStation 5. Something that we did not expect given the little commercial success of PSVR compared to the huge park of consoles from the console already of previous generation of SONY.

If last month through a note on the official PlayStation blog was the confirmation of the PSVR for PS5, now SONY surprises us by presenting the final version of the new control controller, which replaces the cumbersome and out of place PlayStation Move and its combination with the PS Camera that we saw in the first generation of its virtual reality.

The new controller for virtual reality on PS5

SONY has shown the image of the new controller for virtual reality in this generation, which represents a 180º change with respect to the previous model, since the way in which it will be monitored will be through the installed cameras on the PS5’s PS VR. How do we know? Apart from the fact that several patents have appeared that speak of a change in the tracking system from the Outside-In type to the Inside-Out type, common in all PC virtual reality controls, SONY confirms it with the following statement in its Blog:

Tracking: The VR controller is followed by the new VR helmet through a tracking ring at the bottom of the controller.

This confirms that the PS VR for PS5 has cameras installed and therefore can not only be used for virtual reality applications but also for augmented reality. Let’s not forget that SONY confirmed that the new unit will work with a single cable, surely taking advantage of the USB-C connection of the Alt-DP type that is located on the front of the console itself.

Controller VR inherits technologies from DualSense

The technologies developed by SONY and implemented in the DualSense will also be added in the new Controller VR, which will increase the interaction capacity in games in virtual reality for PlayStation consoles compared to what is currently possible with the PS Move on PS4 .

Among the novelties that SONY has presented, we would highlight the following:

  • Adaptive triggers: The same technology of the L2 and R2 triggers of the DualSense controller has been adapted in the Controller VR, in such a way that it generates a resistance when pressed.
  • Haptic Response: the advanced vibration of the DualSense has also been adapted, for greater interaction in virtual reality experiences.
  • Finger detection: The surface of the controller is sensitive to the touch and detects how we place our fingers on it. This allows you to adapt movements such as grasping objects and the position of the fingers at all times.

The controller is divided into two halves, one for the left hand and one for the right hand. In the left hand are the stick to move the characters and the buttons L1, L2 and L3. On the right the camera stick and the R1, R2 and R3 buttons. As for the classic PlayStation buttons of a lifetime, the triangle and square buttons are on the left controller and the circle and X buttons on the right controller.
