History

The origin of SIG is a car construction company created in 1853 by Friedrich Peyer im Hof, Heinrich Moser and Conrad Neher. It won a competition sponsored by the Swiss Defense Ministry, for which it was contracted to manufacture 30,000 [[muskets | musket]. At that time they changed their name to Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG), in German, which means “Swiss Industrial Company”.

P226 pistol

In the 70s of the 20th century, SIG began to design a pistol that was good value for money. Swiss law limited the possibilities for Swiss companies to produce weapons by making it mandatory for them to have a foreign partner. In the case of SIG, the German firm Sauer & Sohn was chosen . The SIG Sauer line of pistols began in 1975 with the SIG P220 . Before World War II Sauer had primarily built cartridge-type shotguns and hunting rifles. During the war they produced a pistol, the Sauer 38H , but were later withdrawn from the market. With SIG as his partner / owner, Sauer returned to handgun production.

MG710 machine gun

SIG also produces a machine gun , the MG 710 , which uses the 7.62x51mm NATO projectile and is based on the German MG42 , used in World War II. It uses a firing system similar to that of the CETME , the G3 and the SIG 510 , and a grenade launcher can be fitted in the muzzle of its barrel. However, despite its quality, its high price means that it has only been exported to Bolivia .

SIG SAUER Inc.

In 1985, SIGARMS was created as the North American branch of SIG in Tysons Corner, Virginia, to import the P220 and P230 pistols. In 1987 SIGARMS moved to Herdon, Virginia, and in 1990 to Exeter, New Hampshire, to accommodate the new factories.

SIGARMS and its European sister companies Sauer & Sohn , Blaser , [[Mauser Jagdwaffen GmbH]] and Swiss Arms , were purchased by Michael Lüke and Thomas Ortmeier in October 2000. On October 1, 2007 SIGARMS changed its official name to SIG Sauer Inc.

Today SIG Sauer is the largest of the five companies and one of the largest arms producers in the world. It also has the highest production growth in the United States, increasing production and sales by nearly 50% since 2005. SIG Sauer recently tripled its workforce and invested $ 18 million in high-tech equipment.

According to company information, one third of the police in the United States use SIG firearms. In the United States, SIG also has a training center, the SIG Sauer Academy, in Epping, New Hampshire.
