Roger Garaudy ( Marseille , 17 as July as 1913 – Paris , 13 as June as 2012 ) was a writer , politician and philosopher French .
He completed university studies in Marseille and Aix-en-Provence , and received a doctorate in Philosophy from the Sorbonne in Paris.
In 1933 he began his membership in the French Communist Party , of whose Central Committee he joined in 1945 .
Member of the National Assembly ( 1945 – 1951 ; 1956 – 1958 ) and of the Senate ( 1959 – 1962 ), in 1953 he obtained his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Moscow with the brilliant thesis Théorie matérialiste de la conscience (Materialist theory of knowledge) .
A member of the Politburo of the PCF since 1956, Garaudy founded and directed the prestigious Center d’Etudes et de Recherches Marxistes (Center for Marxist Studies and Research).
His reformist ideas and the strong public censorship that he made of the Soviet invasion in Czechoslovakia ( 1968 ) confronted him directly with the leadership of the party, which eventually expelled him from the Politburo and the Central Committee in 1970 , and finally from the PCF itself. In 1981 he ran as an independent in the presidential elections of his country, a date on which he also embraced the religion of Islam .
Brilliant politician and writer and ideologist of the PCF for almost twenty years, from his Marxist position he fought for the humanization and democratization of Marxism and for a constant dialogue with Christianity, as he believed that many of its values were in perfect harmony with Marxism. In all his varied theoretical work, Garaudy strove to capture a constant humanistic concern that has progressively inclined him to address the theme of “utopia.”
Author of several books on Islamic thought, including L’islam habite nôtre avenir , Promises of Islam , Córdoba capital of unitary thought , Towards a religious war , Les États-Unis avant-garde de la decadence or The founding myths of Israeli politics . Among those translated into Spanish are: The Dialogue between East and West , Palestine , Hope Project , Lived Poetry: Don Quijote and Los integrismos .
In September 2001 he suffered a stroke. On June 13, 2012, at the age of 99, he passed away at his home on the outskirts of Paris.
