He was born in St. Louis, Missouri , United States on April 24, 1947 . He achieved a doctorate from Stanford University in 1972 . Her American father Arthur Kornberg was a doctor and also won the Nobel Prize (in this case in Medicine) in 1959 for his DNA research.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for elucidating the three-dimensional structure of the yeast RNA polymerase II enzyme complex, a key enzyme in the process of gene transcription in eukaryotic cells, a process by which information is copied from DNA to RNA. The discovery showed how deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, which is essentially a silent map, is “read” by RNA and turned into a real protein within a cell. He found that the nucleosome contains DNA (approximately 200 base pairs) coiled in an octamer of histones.
