Review of The LEGO Movie 2

TT Games and its LEGO saga do not stop. After opening in theaters a few weeks ago, The LEGO Movie 2: The Video Game comes to today’s formats in the form of a concept sandbox adventure. We analyze everything it offers us.

He was already beginning to miss her. Several months in a row without a LEGO set! That situation was “untenable” and TT Games has got to work to offer us the corresponding portion of these adventures. In this case it is the “conversion” of the recent animated feature film that was released in theaters a few weeks ago, The LEGO Movie 2: The Video Game .

In addition and for the first time in a long time, the truth is that it is a relatively original delivery in concept. Does this mean that it breaks with everything? Well no, more than anything because it is based a lot on what the remarkable LEGO Worlds gave us , one of the most curious and original editions within this franchise. And it is inevitable to compare both TT Games productions since they share many aspects that I will explain from now on.

Without wanting to reveal anything important so as not to make a double spoiler (video game and movie), what I can comment on about the argument behind The LEGO Movie 2: The Video Game is that it is as simple and simple as it is full of humor. Come on, which is a common norm in this franchise. A series of strange looking aliens (no green beings) commanded by the eccentric General Chaos have wreaked havoc on the world… and part of the galaxy. And who should send them to their little house? Well to Emmet, Lucy, Batman and company, controllable characters that only represent a negligible percentage of all that it is possible to manage during the game.

Enjoy with The LEGO Movie 2: The Video Game. Now available

Sandbox at its finest LEGOexpressionPrecisely here we find one of the many novelties that this production has, the way in which we are enabling new protagonists, since for this it is necessary to find some blue capsules and, later, stop by the shift store that each planet has to ” redeem them. ” Wait! … what does that mean “each planet”? Well, exactly what you are thinking. During the adventure, it is possible to travel through the galaxy through a series of portals and visit a good handful of different worlds. The “key” to be able to go to each planet are purple bricks that we can obtain in different ways, either by completing missions or simply exploring each corner of the scenarios.

As in all LEGO games, the number of hours of the adventure is greatly expanded with the secondary tasks.

Each world is totally different from the rest and has from its own missions to a particular “look”. And what does each location in which we land offer us? Well, a game formula in total sandbox plan , which although it is true that it presents main objectives and a fixed plot line, offers the player a large number of tasks to be carried out with total freedom. There is a lot to do in this title, we assure you that, and although the main adventure lasts for approximately 10 hours of play , that number can be doubled or tripled if we want to see everything.

As usual in the LEGO series, the local co-op mode is the best of the gameOne of the main tasks that we have to carry out is to scan objects . Thanks to special binoculars, we can obtain shift plans for power generators, trampolines, sprinklers and a good number of vehicles and objects of all kinds (including homes and shops). And in most cases, all of them are essential to be able to advance and overcome certain objectives entrusted to us by the dozens of characters that come together in the funds.

Emmet, Batman, Lucy … the number of characters that appear in the game is considerable.

Once we have the plans of the objects, then we have to build them. And for this it is necessary to have a certain amount of colored bricks, items that in this case play a fundamental role. In fact, I have already warned you that you will surely be a little obsessed with these bricks and you will not stop breaking LEGO objects of the many that are in the scenarios to get as many of them as possible.

And what about the common ingredients throughout the LEGO saga ? That is to say, the sections of platforms, the simple combats against the rivals of the moment, the solving of puzzles and other elements that have always been part of the TT Games titles. Well, they have also been registered, of course, thus giving The LEGO Movie 2: The Videogame a gameplay that is quite varied and much cooler than what the latest installments of it have given us. Nor can I forget the now classic local cooperative mode (online I give up for lost in this saga) that also includes this adventure. An option that is very interesting and highly recommended.

The development of the missions sins of being too predictableTo cite several drawbacks that can be attributed to this game mechanic, the first has to do with the degree of challenge that the title displays, which is as low as expected from a game like this. It is not a defect in itself, of course, but it is a walk. In the same way, most of the tasks we have to carry out are anything but original, and we almost always have to build something, act as messengers, or accumulate a certain amount of materials. More grace and diversity in this aspect would have been really good for development, which sometimes sins of being too predictable and tiresome.

Sympathy continues to be very present in this adventure, one of the hallmarks of the entire saga.

The recreation of the environments is one of the newest elements that this LEGO installment also incorporates. As with the aforementioned LEGO Worlds, the backgrounds are created based on these bricks, giving the graphic section a very distinguished and striking aesthetic touch … although it is not perfect. Very visible popping, textures that can be improved in certain elements, almost constant shading, character fade in and other technical defects are at ease. Some problems that fortunately do not damage the gameplay but they do spoil the graphics a bit.

The sound can be somewhat disappointing for those users who are used to this series. And not because it is a disaster, not at all, but because the now famous dubbing in Spanish of all the voices of the characters has been replaced by “twitterings” in the purest style of those emitted by the characters of Banjo-Kazooie (do you remember ?). Yes, the voice that narrates the adventures of Emmet and company in perfect Spanish is very good, but we miss said “global” dubbing.

“Okay”

The LEGO Movie 2: The Video Game

TT Games differs somewhat from what is offered in the vast majority of its LEGO deliveries to give life to a game with a clearly sandbox spirit that is quite reminiscent of what was experienced a long time ago in LEGO Worlds. Thanks to this change, the adventure is fresher and more attractive than expected and despite the fact that it has certain technical and playable flaws, it is a very entertaining title that can also offer many hours of fun if you want to squeeze its full potential.

  • Additional content of all kinds: characters, extra missions, mini-games …
  • The game oozes sympathy and is suitable for a wide group of users.
  • The change in his style of play brings freshness to the saga.
  • Visually it is quite a striking title …
  • … But it also has quite a few technical flaws.
  • The missions are too predictable and bland.
  • Shall we throw in the towel by asking for the online cooperative mode for this series
