Railway Worker’s Day in Cuba

Cuban Railroad Workers’ Day . This day has been celebrated in Cuba since 1975 , when the first section of the central line was completed and Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz operated a Soviet-made locomotive as an inauguration.

The railwayman’s day

Cuba was the first country in Latin America to have a railroad, in 1837 . Given the characteristics of being an elongated island, this is the ideal means of transportation for both passengers and goods. The repair of the railway is an idea of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz , who inaugurated on January 29, 1975 , in Placetas , in the old province of Las Villas , the first section of the reconstruction of the railway central.

Every January 29 is celebrated on this day to honor those who assume tasks of great importance from various responsibilities and whose complex work is essential for the country’s economy.

Operators, machinists and mechanics work every day to maintain a specialized workforce capable of increasing efficiency indicators and technical control, to consolidate safety in the sector.

Throughout the country they make enormous efforts to rescue the sector, not only in the economic and social order, but also from its historical significance, and an investment program is implemented that will allow progress in the repair and maintenance of the railroad system and have new means for the transportation of passengers.

Of vital importance for the economy of the country is this means of transport in the agro-sugar sector, which is used in the transportation of cane and sugar already processed, destined for ports and warehouses of the internal economy.

The railroad began in Cuba in 1837 , in a section of the province of Havana , and it is claimed that the island was the seventh or eighth country in the world and the first in Latin America to have its services.

The largest island in the Caribbean had a railroad before Spain , then the country’s colonial metropolis.

This date is a deserved recognition to all the railway workers, for their sacrifice, effort, imagination and creativity, for their contribution to the development of the country, its culture and its people.
