Description

The adjective pink comes from the color of its waters, which turn especially pinkish during the dry season. This is due to an algae called Dunaliella salina that produces a red pigment to absorb light from the sun . The high level of salinity allows people to float with ease, just like in the Dead Sea .

Around the lake there are small extractive salt farms that began in the 70s. Men, with water up to their chests, break the salt deposited at the bottom with sticks before collecting it with shovels and filling canoes with a capacity of up to tonne. The women unload the pirogues and accumulate the salt on the edge of the lake to dry and bleach it in the sun. Both men and women are protected from the corrosive salt smearing with butter shea. The salt is used for canned fish or for export.

The lake is known the arrival of the Paris Dakar rally

The lake is known worldwide for having been the arrival of the Paris Dakar rally in almost all its editions until 2008 , when the organization decided to suspend the competition and move it to South America as of 2009 .

The pink lake of Middle Island is already recorded in the diaries of the explorer Matthew Flinders, in 1802 . Flinders had climbed to the highest summit on Middle Island (now known as Mount Flinders) to survey the waters in the area, when he discovered this incredible lake. Middle Island and its pink lake are located in the middle of an intact jungle area. The only way to see the lake is from the air . Additionally, you can explore the islands and abundant wildlife of the Recherche Archipelago on a cruise departing from Esperance.

Its mysteries

The Pink Lake near Esperance is another pink lake set against the backdrop of one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal scenery , seven kilometers from the town of Esperance . With a certain climate, the lake acquires a soft pink hue, due to a high concentration of algae in the water. For the best views, go to the Pink Lake lookout.
