Blyd River Canyon

It is one of the largest canyons in the world, it is 26 kilometers long and is the second largest in Africa , although it is also the third in the world with walls up to 800 meters high. Second reason, in addition to being imposing, the green covers it completely thanks to its tropical climate, something a bit strange in the canyons that usually form in desert areas. It is considered the largest “green canyon” internationally due to its lush subtropical vegetation and is part of the Drakensberg Range in the Mpumalanga region .

Its highest point rises 1,944m above sea level, while the area where the river leaves the canyon does not reach 561m in height, creating a landscape of incomparable visual strength where capricious nature shines in all its splendor. It is also the habitat of an impressive diversity of fauna that includes numerous fish, different species of antelope, hippopotamus, crocodiles and a great variety of primates.

Bourke´s Luck Potholes or “Bourke’s Luck” Lookout

Most tours organized by the South African population of Nelspruit offer a package that includes the jewel in the crown the Kruger Park safari , along with a day visit to three points of interest. Along the river we will find Bourke’s Luck Potholes . The name of this place where the River Treur jumps to join the Blyde . Bourke was one of the first prospectors to come to this area and proclaimed the lands as his own. The region turned out to be riddled with the golden metal, yet he found absolutely nothing. Hence the name “Bourke’s Luck”. Water erosion has taken hundreds of years to create hundreds of pot-shaped holes in the rock.

The Lisbon Falls

.

The Lisbon Falls , here is a small balcony from which you can appreciate the beautiful waterfall from 95 meters high, the highest in the Mpumalanga region . The falls in general have a totally hypnotizing effect, in the landscape behind the Lisbon Fall there is a beautiful background of Mountains covered by a green blanket that hide flora and fauna.

Natural reserve

The canyon is within the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve , in Mpumalanga province , almost on the border of Mozambique and Swaziland . The Blyde River has also shaped the rock formations in a very curious way. At the confluence of the Treur and Blyde rivers are a series of vortices or erosions in a spiral shape that resemble natural pools. Easily accessible via paved roads from the small village of Graskop. The combination of greens, browns and blues bathed in a shimmering, relentless sun gave the place a beauty of irresistible magnetism. In total, the protected area in which the park is located has some 29,000 hectares of rocky headlands, dense vegetation and a lot of wildlife.

sports

The Blyde Canyon is the third largest in the world and not only offers views but you can go rafting , hiking , fishing or cycling . It covers 29,000 hectares and offers accommodation in the reserve for those who want to lose a few days in the forests of the lowlands.
