Negative Effects of Excessive Primordialism

The habits of each individual and group emerge because it has become a daily routine. This habit will be difficult to break, if it is attached to someone. These habits are known as primordialism, which is almost the same as the meaning of ethnocentrism .

Primordialism is more about culture which is often carried out in certain ethnic groups, while ethnocentrism is more about feeling proud of the tribe and measuring other tribes by the standards they have. Both also have positive and negative consequences. This depends on the practice, if excessive, of course it has more negative impacts.

Primordialism

Primordialism does exist and cannot be removed from the social reality of every human being. People understand very well the existence of primordialism, sometimes they are not aware when they have taken action in the sense of primordialism . We know that this habit, although it is seen as strange by other groups, for people who have done it every day is normal.

But one thing for sure, primordialism has several types that we can find in various countries, especially countries that have many tribes. Among them;

  1. Tribal primordialism
  2. Religious primoordialism
  3. Regional primordialism

Each primordialism will be very visible and attached to a person because it has been studied since childhood until now. In fact, it will continue to be used in everyday life and will be continued to the next generation.

Negative Effects of Primordialism

As for some of the negative effects of primordialism, among others;

1.   Disrupt the survival of a nation

When primordialism is excessive, there is no tolerance for other parties. He will always live what he has learned. If primordialism is strong, it will not be easily influenced by anything. This is if neither party wants to understand, national life will be disrupted.

2.   Inhibits modernization

Too adhering to what has been learned, it will be difficult to accept something new. We know that the characteristics of modernization are very important to keep pace with developments in various parts of the world. When you use the Arabic term sami’na wa atho’na, what you hear will be done and afraid to make a change.

3.   Hindering development

Attitudes that stick to old habits will find it difficult to make changes. Don’t even want to make changes. Development planning is considered anything that destroys the order, which has existed since ancient times. This makes it difficult for those who wish to enter certain areas.

4.   Inhibiting relations between nations

The difference between one nation and another is clear. Those who cling to habits will not easily open up to outsiders. Some groups even close themselves off to other parties so that what has become a habit is not lost.

5.   Inhibits the assimilation process

Various forms of assimilation occur in society, usually due to the meeting of two cultures to form a new culture that is more relevant today. When we stick to what has been learned, it will be difficult to assimilate.

6.   Inhibits the integration process

The integration process is something that must be done in a nation. Communities who cling to their respective cultures will hinder the process of integration. The integration process can still occur but at a very slow tempo.

Society needs strong reasons for integration, as we saw during the colonial period in Indonesia, people are united because they feel the same thing and have the same desire.

7.   Eliminating the objectivity of science

People who prioritize subjectivity so that sometimes the objectivity of science is not so trusted in certain cases. This will destroy a science.

8.   Causes of discrimination

People who put primordialism will prioritize their group more than other groups. When in a position where the majority is the same group, there must be discrimination in various ways in the environment for people other than the group.

9.   Creating conflict between tribes

Differences in habits, especially in the field of cultural elements between one tribe and another, create many disputes when the two tribes meet. Problems that are initially individual can become group problems because of this primordialism.

10.                     Difficult to occur acculturation

Communication between groups is difficult, let alone conducting acculturation in the field of culture. The acculturation of culture which is carried out quickly and results in a large change of habits will certainly be rejected by the majority of the existing society.

Examples of Primordial Negative Attitudes

There are also examples of negative primordialism practices . For example;

  1. Having a corrupt governor as long as one tribe

The governor is the highest point of leadership in a region in Indonesia. Some regions in Indonesia still choose candidates for governor based on regional descent, even though they have a track record of having committed acts of corruption.

Conditions like this of course result in the hindrance of development, because the attitude of society is not open to other groups to drink racism which results in lack of empathy for others.

So, that’s the article we can present to all circles regarding the negative impact of primordialism and examples of its attitude. Hopefully it will provide insight for those of you who are in need.
