Description

The old Moritzburg Castle in the city of Halle is a very valuable example of the characteristic Gothic military architecture in Germany at the end of the 15th century . Its conflicting history has inevitably been reflected in the very different interventions that have modified it over the years. Despite the numerous alterations that took place, the building has maintained to this day the formal structure of its main original architectural elements: the perimeter wall-enclosure, three of the four circular towers in the corners, as well as the central parade ground.

The partial collapse of the north and west wings that occurred in the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War , linked for centuries the castle to the romantic image of ruin as it has survived to this day. With the exception of a project not carried out by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1828 , it has not been until now when it has been considered to carry out a comprehensive intervention that transforms and expands the old ruin for the Art Museum , housed there since 1904 .

Collections

A very remarkable collection of modern art, mainly of German expressionism, which includes works that Lyonel Feininger painted from the city of Halle, will now be expanded with the Gerlinger donation , one of the most valuable private collections dedicated to the expressionist group Die Brücke .

Extension

Our expansion proposal is based on a single and clear architectural idea. It is a new roof, conceived as a large folded platform, which rises and breaks to allow the passage of natural light, and from which the new exhibition spaces will hang. As a consequence of this operation, the floor of the old ruin is completely freed, allowing a unique space capable of admitting different exhibition possibilities.

This solution is complemented by the construction of two new vertical communication cores. The first of them is located in the north wing, solving the connection of the different levels that must communicate with each other. On the other hand, a new contemporary tower, 25 meters high, located on the site, which once occupied the missing bastion, constitutes a nucleus of access to the new exhibition spaces that overlooks the distant views of the city. .

The new landscape of metal roofs and tower, dialogues in its angular geometry, with the irregular volume of the high roofs already existing in the castle. Like those disturbing and expressive forms painted by Feininger, exhibited by the museum, the new fragments add to the continuous process of transformation that has characterized the history of Moritzburg Castle over time.
