Minecraft – How playing with my daughter made me enjoy this game

Minecraft is one of the most famous games in the world. Available on all current platforms, and even several older ones, it has sold over 200 million copies and recently returned, along with other games, to the World Video Game Hall of Fame, the international video game hall of fame. in a Manhattan museum. Minecraft is a sandbox game released in 2011 but still updating today. He has experienced several adventure spin-offs such as the TellTale or Dungeons series .

It is with a view to finding a cute game that is accessible to all ages, so that I can play it with my daughter, that I turned to this one. However, the game was not won in advance.

My experience on Minecraft before July 2020

I was one of the buyers of Minecraft in its Alpha version , when the hunger bar was not yet present. But my experience was limited to making a few stone huts without really aiming before stopping. Following videos from famous people on Youtube, I tried several times to get back to it but without really succeeding in catching the bandwagon. However, I really enjoyed watching all of these videos and still watch them today.

First with the long series of videos of Fanta and Bob  (a chain that Bob holds alone now), a few years later I discovered ZeratoR and followed the videos he made with Fukano to finally arrive at the recent one. series from Wankil Studio . All these hours of videos allowed me to see the possibilities of this game. Over the years I have even been able to follow, at a minimum, the various updates. A whole wealth of knowledge that I could not exploit for a simple reason, the common point between these series is that there are always at least two to play, which gives another vision of this sandbox with great potential .

After the redemption on PS4 to play with my daughter

We now come to this month of July 2020. Between the end of my game of The Last of Us: Part II and waiting for Ghost of Tsushima , I was looking for a game that I could do with my 4 year old daughter , at least who does not show many human deaths or overly realistic monsters. No longer having a computer, I turned to the PS4 version of Minecraft, especially since it offers the possibility of playing in Split Screen .

I started, with her looking at me, in creative mode. We found a small island where I started building a house on the beach, a nice little corner to show her the basics of the game. When the moment came when she was sleeping (finally!), I said to myself “ why not try in survival mode on my side? ”, Just to be able to occupy myself without another game nearby. I settled in an abandoned village near the spawn point, secured a small house and started mining, that’s where my whole gaming experience changed .

The start of my cube madness

The next day, with less sleep, I was able to show my daughter what I had achieved . I enlarged the house during the night, installed the survival kit, started to make a small field of wheat, mined for long hours. We walked around, she still observing, and she asked me herself if we could bring the cows home. It was the start of our animal farm.

After the cow enclosure came the sheep enclosure, then the hens and finally the pigs. In the evening, when she went to bed, I continued to improve the house , which was more spacious and with themed rooms. I had fun creating a whole room for enchantment, a specific place for crafting, and,  my little surprise, a bed for her (it doesn’t sound like that but it’s a real gift in her eyes).

We have been together in the Nether , with the Ghast she always asks me to go and see that she calls “the crying jellyfish”, she saw me redecorating the whole house in survival mode (except the large map where I got creative to go faster and not tire her) and many other things. As of this writing I have found the Ender portal, I just have to make Ender eyes to go through it and fight the Dragon, with her, the Wither will come after.

Minecraft is a game for learning

Having a huge attraction for video games , hence my presence as a writer on Jeu.Video, it seemed normal to me to share my passion with my daughter . With Minecraft, I can show him the creative abilities of video games. This is not my first attempt, she plays at the levels that I was able to create for her on Super Mario Maker 2 or on her own at Pokemon Let’s Go.

But Minecraft has this ability to be sufficiently unreal, thanks to its cubic art direction, while still allowing for understanding things from real life . What seems normal to us may be an abstract concept for children. The day / night cycle, for example, can thus be observed, showing that carrots, beets, potatoes, grow in the ground which must be plowed and put in close water to make them grow. On the other hand, I dodged the question “In real life, how do cows make babies?”, We will wait a bit for that.

Monsters like zombies, creepers and other skeletons are just cubic shapes that are not scary, they are not real or even realistic. Also, we haven’t tried it yet, but it is possible to play on the same screen but in two different game modes . When I lend her a controller to play with me, she will be in creative mode so as not to have the stress of hunger or enemies, but will still be able to accompany me and try out the controls of a game. first person more complicated than a 2D platform.

Much better multiplayer game

What emerges from my experience is that this game of countless abilities takes on its full value when played with someone, regardless of age. Even though most of the time I was alone, taking advantage of the night to improve what has become our base, I was not playing for myself, but for my daughter. To show him the entertainment and playfulness of our great passion.

One day maybe she will tell me that she doesn’t like video games and I will accompany her in her passion as best I can, but my great hope is that one day we can play together on the games. latest games released with cooperation , sharing new horizons and new stories together, comfortably installed on our sofa. In the meantime I’ll leave you, I have Ender pearls to collect.
