Mighty goose Analysis

Although it is not going through its best moment, fortunately run’n gun style games like Contra or Gunstar Heroes (to name a couple of examples) continue to have a leading role today, although it is true that the vast majority of the titles that are allowed to see of this style are of indie origin . That is precisely the case of the work that concerns us and that is called Mighty Goose , a rather suggestive production loaded to the brim with action as is customary in this genre. A fairly entertaining game that also reaches all current formats, including new generation consoles.

This all-out arcade action adventure stars a goose (hence its name). But not an ordinary one logically, but a space bounty hunter armed to the peak and who is also capable of traveling through the galaxy. And to what end? Well, stopping the bad guy on duty, King Void in this case, who has the habit of conquering galaxies with his army of tin bugs. A very simple plot that does not give much more of itself, something common and what we are very used to in this type of games since what is really important about these action odyssey is its pure and simple development.

Action and run’n gun shooting await us in an independent proposal that closely resembles that experienced in games like Metal Slug.

An armed and dangerous goose

Being a run’n gun game , surely you already know perfectly what you are going to find in global terms in this title: tons of non-stop action. A recipe that, despite being quite corseted, the truth is that this work manages to avoid falling into monotony . Obviously, our main task is to liquidate as many opponents as they drop down the screen, rivals who we have to try to get as much lead as possible into their metal bodies to make them jump through the air. A dynamic that, due to having lived it a thousand times before in similar games, does not stop having all the interest in the world. A constant rush of adrenaline that’s hard to resist.

The variety of levels that this work boasts is more than striking, and more considering the genre to which it belongs.

The protagonist is capable of performing the classic actions within this type of proposal, including the almost obligatory evasive maneuver that allows us to become invulnerable for a few tenths of a second that are fundamental on many occasions. The rhythm at which the action takes place does not give us a moment of respite and when we are not scorching a tank that is chasing us, we are in the middle of a fight against a small army of minions or dodging the onslaught of an armored robot . A game formula that goes straight to the point but that, as we have just mentioned, gives more of itself than it may seem at first.

We can get to use an impressive amount of weapons, being one of the main claims that the title offers us.

The variety of situations that Mighty Goose proposes to us goes beyond advancing and shooting only. That’s because from time to time also we have to deliver more than an aerial battle as if it were a shooter to scroll traditional side, stand the constant siege of enemies who do not stop appearing on screen as you descend in an elevator, etc. An effort carried out by the developers to bring diversity to their work that we greatly appreciate from here. But there is more. As we progress, we can enable new fatigue partners(CPU controlled types) that help us during battles. And along with this, it is also possible to improve the arsenal of the protagonist, which is capable of wielding incredibly powerful weapons and that become one of the great claims of the title. A very solid set to which the appearance of the classic final bosses are added to shape a game system that is not original and surprising as well as quite entertaining.

When we collect a vehicle, our capacity for destruction multiplies even more.

A playful offer to which is added a staging that, although in the first levels can be somewhat basic, as we move forward it is gaining in variety, sparkle and quality. The pixel art aesthetic is not the most attractive we have ever enjoyed in a game of this style, but it more than delivers. A visual aspect in which special effects stand outAbove all else, although the character animations aren’t bad either. To put a downside, the design of the protagonist does not convince us, but obviously it is a simple matter of taste. And if the visual aspect is quite attractive, the soundtrack also reaches a high level, with sound effects that are heard with the forcefulness that these types of titles require and a very good soundtrack created by Dominic Ninmark ( Blazing Chrome ).

In general, we are facing a fairly brilliant title in its aesthetic aspect: explosions, special effects … But the design of the protagonist … seems to us that it could be improved.

Frantic and classic action

We are many gamers who still demand old-fashioned action titles , that is, side scrolling, shooting and explosions everywhere and pixelated graphics. The developers of Blastmap have wanted to content us with a production that clearly draws on the great exponents of the genre, such as Contra or especially Metal Slug, clear references and unbeatable mirrors in which to look at yourself. And we believe that he has done a more than worthy job, given that although he does not present any relevant aspect out of the ordinary that is minimally original beyond the (questionable) appearance of the protagonist, the game dynamics are frantic, the variety of situations that it proposes is remarkable considering the characteristics of the title and is technically well raised. A really recommendable game that is fantastic to eliminate tension.
