Biographical synthesis
Joseph Barbera was born on 24 March as as 1911 in Manhattan , New York , United States . His family moved to Brooklynwhen he was four months old. He was the eldest of three brothers. His father Vincent when he was 15 years old abandoned them and his maternal uncle became his main father figure. He began to show interest in art from an early age. He was a deliveryman in a tailor shop, worked in a bank, and then later tried to become a cartoonist for a magazine called The NY Hits Magazine, but was unsuccessful. In fact, he began to develop his capacity as a cartoonist and to create stories with his characters when he was employed at the Van Beuren studios where he was a screenwriter and animator. The studio was closed in 1936 and Barbera moved into Paul Terry’s studio, Terrytoons.

After learning that MGM studios were developing facilities dedicated exclusively to animation, he emigrated to the western coast of the country where he met William Hanna with whom he shared more than 50 years of work and who helped him create important characters within cartoons. like Tom and Jerry. Jerry had his first appearance in the musical Levando anclas , in which he dances alongside actor and dancer Gene Kelly , making that scene a classic in American cinema. In 1957 they founded the Hanna-Barbera animation company, which soon after would become one of the largest in Hollywood in its field. There was born the prehistoric family The Flintstones , The Jetsons, the clumsy ghostbusting dog Scooby-Doo and Yogi Bear. They both had different skills that they used in the studio; Barbera was dedicated to writing and sketching, while Hanna was in charge of the animation rhythm, writing of scripts and selection of employees. After Hanna’s death in 2001 , Barbera continued to serve as an executive producer for Warner Bros. Animation and served as a screenwriter, producer, and director on The KarateGuard in 2005 , Tom and Jerry’s first short film in more than 45 years. His last work was the animated film Tom and Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale in 2007 .

Hanna and Barbera won seven Oscars and eight Emmys. His characters have become icons of popular culture and have appeared in other media such as movies, books, and toys.

He died on a Monday December 18 of the 2006 , at his home in Los Angeles , California at 95 years of age a natural death.
