He was vice president of the Association of Architecture Students , when he bravely fought alongside its president José Antonio Echeverría (1932-1957) against the repressive forces of the tyrant Fulgencio Batista .
On May 8, 1955, he was seriously injured at the tribute of the Federation of University Students (FEU) to Antonio Guiteras , in Matanzas , and on January 28, 1956 in Havana on the occasion of the anniversary of José Martí .
