Biographical synthesis

At the beginning of the fifties he became the true predecessor of graphic eroticism. When nudes were relegated to fringe and semi-clandestine magazines, he sought to spread human sexuality. With a playful tone, but in a passage where freedom of expression, serious journalism and literature fit.

Trajectory

Only 27 years old when he worked as the director of circulation for a magazine called Children’s Activities. He had been brought up in a strict, conservative and very religious family, although he dreamed of creating a magazine that he would call Stag Party (a phrase used in English to talk about a party for single men). With a lot of effort and money raised among friends, he managed to get the first issue of his magazine, which in the process became Playboy and which had as its corporate image a rabbit, drawn by Arv Miller .

He became famous when in the ’60s he ran his empire from the wide bed of the Playboy Mansion located in Chicago . The mogul owned a chain of nightclubs, staffed by girls dressed as bunnies (“bunnys”) and spread to other businesses, such as casinos and hotels. In that same year, “Playboy’s Penthouse” was made, a weekly TV series where he appeared with a lot of the magazine’s “friends”, like the comedian Lenny Bruce and singers like Ella Fitzgerald . It was his demonstration against puritanism and for the pleasures of life. But in the ’70s, the empire began to collapse, when it got tougher competition, magazines like High Society or Hustler (Larry Flint’s).

Personal life

Hugh Hefner got engaged on December 24, 2010] with Crystal Harris, this engagement that would lead to her third marriage, but on June 14, 2011 Crystal Harris decided to end the relationship. However, on December 31, 2012, on New Years Eve at the Playboy Mansion, the two finally got married, accompanied by their closest friends and family.

Death

He died in the city of Los Angeles on September 27 , 2017 , at the age of 91.
