How to troubleshoot ReadProcessMemory

ReadProcessMemory is one of the difficult error messages. Unlike other mistakes, this one keeps coming out of the blues and this makes it difficult to diagnose.

Personally, I came across the message » Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request completed » multiple times. Speaking from my experience, it usually happens when my Windows machine is running a bunch of apps in the background. The error message also appears when opening applications and installation files.

As I said above, it is quite evident that the error is closely related to the memory problem. The error message also suggests the possibility that the operating system cannot read or write the request. As with most error messages, we need to fix the problem and see if it goes away.

Let’s start with the most obvious things and then move on to the ones that are a bit advanced (be sure to create a System Restore point before trying the troubleshooting steps).

How to troubleshoot ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory

1. Restart

Yes, the reboot is like a drug for all problems. Invariably, most problems go away with a reboot, and ReadProcess memory is no exception. Also, try restarting the Explorer and see if the error persists. On a related note, try disabling your antivirus / firewall and see if it makes a difference.

2. Recheck the file permissions

The error “Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed” can also occur when the user does not have sufficient permissions. In this case, try to take ownership of the file.

3. Run Check Disk Utility
