How to transfer videos to iPhone or iPad

There are many of us who want to regain the habit of traveling this summer once we are vaccinated and after spending a year and a half “locked up” in our cities or regions. And for those trips, many iPad users seek to save videos locally on the device itself without having to connect (train or plane trips usually have little or no data coverage).

We know that we can use downloads from services like Netflix, but what if the video we want to save is a file on our computer? What if the iPad model is rather old and AirDrop does not solve that file transfer? We are going to see a simple method to transfer videos to the iPhone or iPad completely free of charge and without having to resort to cables.

A local web and server to move videos from a PC to an iPhone or iPad wirelessly

For this we will need the computer where we have these files stored (it can be a Mac or a PC with Linux or Windows), our iPad or iPhone with the free VLC player installed on it and a Wi-Fi connection to which both terminals are connected. The better that Wi-Fi network is, the less the transfer will take.

Open the VLC application on the iPad or iPhone and click on the “Network” section that you have in the bottom bar of the interface:

We are interested in activating the option ‘Share via WiFi’ , which will give us a local IP address just under its title as you can see in the screenshot above. Now, on the computer where you have the videos stored, open any modern web browser (Edge, Firefox, Safari, Chrome …) and enter that IP address as the URL. A website like this will load you:

The only thing you have to do now is drag and drop any video you have on your computer on the web so that it will be transferred to the VLC video library on the iPhone or iPad without problems:

VLC never gives problems with modern video formats , so you don’t have to worry if your files are in formats like MKV or even MPG or AVI or if you need to incorporate subtitles in SRT format. The video takes up local storage on your iPhone or iPad, but you can delete it from the same device without problems once you have finished watching it. You have it in the ‘Video’ section of the bottom bar of its interface.

Other options to transfer videos to iPhone or iPad without cables

Alternatively we can use other applications and services to be able to do this same operation. Two of those apps are the popular Plex or its rival Infuse , which offer the ability to easily sync content between devices through their apps.

IN APPLESFERA

Plex will be more similar to the Apple TV app: channel support and integration with content from other services

Of course, both options will ask you for a subscription to be able to do so. Infuse asks for a monthly fee of 0.99 euros or an annual one of 9.99 euros (or we can buy a lifetime license for 79.99 euros). For its part, Plex requires a Plex Pass subscription for 4.99 euros per month . It may at the interface level offer more options, but there is the free VLC to save you the pitfall without having to spend money.
