How to restore audio on WhatsApp

If your goal is to restore the audio on WhatsApp , that is, to make sure that you can hear the audio of voice messages or calls / video calls again or that of incoming notifications, in the next chapters you will find some tips that may be useful to you.

Check your audio settings

The first piece of advice I can give you is to check your device’s audio settings . In other words, you need to check that the audio level is set to an optimal value to be heard.

If you have an Android smartphone , then press the Volume + side key , so as to increase the volume of the sound generated by multimedia files, such as voice messages. During a call / video call, by pressing the Volume + key you can increase the conversation volume.

Alternatively, start the Settings app , select the Sound and vibration item and move the levers under the heading Multimedia files to the right (to increase the volume of multimedia files), Ringtone (for incoming calls / video calls), Notifications (for receiving notifications in chats).

Obviously make sure that no Do Not Disturb mode is active or that the Android smartphone is set to Silent . In such cases, the ringer or notification sounds will be muted. Still in the Sound & Vibration section of Android Settings , make sure Do Not Disturb is set to Off and Sound Mode to Call in Progress .

If you have an iPhone , on the other hand, press the Volume + key to increase the ringtone sound or, during a call / video call, to increase the current conversation.

By swiping from top to bottom near the top right corner (iPhone with Face ID) or from bottom to top near the bottom edge of the display (iPhone with Home button), move up the volume indicator . Alternatively, start the Settings app , select the Sounds and atypical feedback item and move the lever in the Ringtone and alerts section to the right .

On PC , find the volume lever in the lower right area of the Windows taskbar or at the top right of the macOS menu bar . You can also press the Volume + key found on your computer keyboard.

In this regard, if you want to know more about how to turn up the volume on WhatsApp for voice messages , I recommend reading my dedicated tutorial.

If you continue to experience problems, be sure to check the following.

  • On smartphones, check that the proximity sensor is not covered or damaged: in this case, WhatsApp will switch to listening mode with the speaker of the call and the sound will no longer be emitted from the side speakers. I told you about this topic in my tutorials on how to activate Android proximity sensor and how to activate iPhone proximity sensor .
  • Check on your smartphoneor PC that headphones or earphones are not connected via cable or Bluetooth : in this case, the sound will be reproduced on the latter, automatically disabling the speakers built into the device.
  • On PC, make sure that exactly the correct audio output is selected and that there are no problems with the audio device: in this regard, you can consult my tutorial on how to restore PC audio .
  • For notification sounds, check that you have not deactivated them from the WhatsApp app: in the WhatsApp Settingson Android or iPhone , press the Notifications item and make sure that an audio file is selected under the Notification tone / Sounds item. On PC , in the WhatsApp Settings panel, just make sure that Sounds is enabled . I told you about it in detail in my guide .
