Audacity

Let’s start with the most famous and used audio editing software. Audacity can be downloaded for free from the official website and is absolutely compatible with both Windows and macOS and Linux . Among its hundreds of features, obviously there is the one related to PC audio recording. Once you have downloaded the program for your operating system, just double click on its icon to start the installation wizard.

Furthermore, if you want to export all the recordings in MP3 format (ie the most common one), you will also need to download the “LAME MP3” plug-in and select the button for your operating system again. At this point, you will be able to proceed without problems with the registration.

  • Open “Audacity” on the PC
  • Click on the drop-down menu to the right of the microphone icon in the top menu bar
  • Select the source to register (for example “Speakers”)
  • Start recording by clicking on the red circle icon at the top left

Once the recording has been completed, it can be saved by simply clicking on “File” at the top left and then “Export audio” .

Apowersoft Free Online Audio Recorder

The best universal alternative is undoubtedly “Apowersoft Free Online Audio Recorder” which, as widely anticipated by the name, will work without any problem directly via the web interface. It will therefore not be necessary to download any additional software (apart from a very simple plug-in to allow the site to interface with the computer). As a result, it will work with any operating system.

  • Access the Apowersoft Free Online Audio Recorder website by clicking on this link
  • Click on “Start Recording ” in the center
  • Download and install the launcher as indicated
  • Click on the speaker icon at the bottom left to select the source to record
  • Start recording by clicking on the usual red circle
  • Stop the registration by clicking on the same button again

Screwlab

Now let’s move on to software a little more specific and designed for certain operating systems. Screwlab is in fact compatible only with Windows and can be downloaded for free from this link . Once the file has been downloaded, it can be installed by simply double clicking on its icon.

  • Open the newly installed Screwlab app
  • Click on “Recorder Settings” at the bottom left to change the recording parameters (optional operation)
  • Start recording with the “Rec” button at the bottom of the screen
  • Choose your preferred format and select the folder for saving
  • Confirm the start of registration

Once the registration is complete, you can safely stop using the “Stop” button at the bottom.

Alternative for Windows

If Screwlab does not work as expected, a valid alternative dedicated exclusively to Windows is “Moo0 Audio Recorder” , a program with a much simpler and more minimal interface. This can be downloaded for free from the official developer website .

  • Open the previously installed “Moo0 Audio Recorder”
  • Click on “Folder:” in the “Outgoing File” section to select the save folder
  • Choose a name and an export format (mp3 recommended) from the same section
  • Choose the recording source via the drop-down menu at the bottom left
  • Start recording with the middle button at the bottom

Once the recording is stopped (by clicking on “Stop!” Below), it can be saved in the previously selected folder.

Audio Hijack

Finally, we close with a convenient application compatible this time with macOS. Its name is “Audio Hijack” and even in this case it can be downloaded for free from the official website . Once the software has been downloaded and started, a welcome tutorial will appear, which will end with the “Dive Right in” button . From this moment on, you can start using the app.

  • Click on “New session” in the main screen
  • Select the recording source by clicking on “Application audio” (to record the audio output from a specific app), or on “System audio” (to record all the audio output from the computer)
  • Start recording with the red button at the bottom left (and stop it by clicking it again)
  • Click on “Recordings” at the bottom right to view all recordings and export your favorite ones
