What is the way to add a hanging indent in your presentation?
The hanging indentation is one in which the paragraph will be aligned towards the right margin of the document except for its first line. This typography is normally used in the bibliography and the list of references, as the APA standards indicate so. In Microsoft PowerPoint it is also possible to add text and therefore, you can also configure the type of indentation that you want to add.
First of all, you must enter the text on your slide, you do this by inserting a “Text Box” located in the “Object” option of the “Home” tab or in the “Insert” tab, write your paragraph in question and then in the “Home” tab look for the “Paragraph” option and click on the arrow that appears in the corner to display the menu.

When inserting slides into PowerPoint from another presentation , the text may already have a default format or the same if you have already opened a made presentation. To add the hanging indentation, follow the same process as the previous section, although in this case, as they are not documents with your authorship, they may be protected and you cannot make any edits.
When this happens, the “Enable Edition” option should appear at the top, when you click there, you can already edit the indentation of the paragraphs of the presentation . Go to one of them and click on the edge of the “Text Box” in which they are written or shade the entire paragraph, then go to the “Paragraph” option, display its menu and in “Special”, choose the option of “French Indentation”, save the changes and that’s it.
How can you change the level of indentation applied to your slides?
APA Standards accept indent spacing of 5 spaces (normal indent and hanging indent) or, what is the same, 1.25 cm. When placing this font in PowerPoint, the program will place a default measure that will vary depending on the version you have, but you can still change this dimension yourself.
In the same Paragraph dialog box , in the “Special” option there is the “Before Text” option, this will be enabled when you select one of the two types of indentation, if you do not have any, you will not be able to use it. In this option you can change the level of indentation you want in centimeters, when you have selected the desired dimension, click on “OK” and also save the changes made.
What should you do to indent only the first line of text?
An excellent way to add indentations is also by bringing the already edited text from another platform, in this case we would have to convert Word into a PowerPoint presentation , the same Microsoft Word program allows you to export these files in other formats such as .ppt, .xls , .pdf; although we can also convert them into web pages for it.
In case you want the normal indentation, that is, the one that affects only the first line, follow the same steps that we gave you: “Home” > “Paragraph” > Display the menu > “Indentation” > Display the submenu of “ Special” and select “First line”; You must have previously selected the dialog box or shaded the text you want to make changes to.
Once you have done everything, save the changes as well. In case you want to remove all the indentation formatting that you added, go to the “Paragraph” menu and in “Special” select “(None)”, this will remove any type of indentation that you have added; another way to do it is to use the command Ctrl + Z, which will delete the changes made as well or on the semicircular arrow that is located in the upper left corner of the program.
