How to improve the performance of GeForce graphics cards in Windows 10

Microsoft has taken another step towards optimizing Windows 10 for gaming. A major update to build 2004 introduced a hardware accelerated GPU scheduling option. It significantly improves the performance of the video card with memory, allowing it to allocate resources directly. This reduces latency and dramatically improves overall performance. Moreover, on weaker video cards with a narrow memory bus or with a small number of gigabytes, the improvements will be most noticeable.

Next, we will tell you how to enable this option in order to increase the FPS in games, and what you need for this.

So far, support for the new option has appeared only in GeForce video cards of the Pascal and Turing generations. Also requires NVIDIA driver 451.48 and latest build 64-bit Windows 10. If you are unable to update the OS through the update center, then reinstall the system from the official image.

How to enable GPU scheduling

  1. Install thelatest build of Windows 10 (2004 or newer).
  2. UpdateNVIDIA drivers from the official website.
  3. Open in Windows Settings(the gear button in Start).
  4. Go to the “System”section .
  5. Switch to the Displaytab on the left.
  6. Scroll down the main part of the window and at the very end click on “Graphics Settings”.
  7. At the top of the section that opens, there will be a subsection “Scheduling a GPU with hardware acceleration”– click on the “Reduce latency time …” switch immediately below it.
  8. The switch should light up orange with the inscription “On.” , and under it should appear a request to restart the PC.
  9. Restart your computer for the scheduling feature to work.

What to do if GPU scheduling option doesn’t appear

Double-check that you have the correct graphics card and the correct version of Windows 10:

  1. The graphics card model and driver version can be viewed in the NVIDIA Control Panelunder Help > System Information .
  2. The build version of Windows 10 can be viewed in Update Center by clicking on the OSBuild Information link .

If everything matches the points above, then try restarting your computer after reinstalling drivers or updating Windows. As a last resort, try editing the registry:

  1. Press Win + the R.
  2. Enter “regedit”(without quotes).
  3. Follow the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ GraphicsDrivers.
  4. Change the value of the HwSchModefunction to 2 .

Based on early tests, enabling the “Scheduling Hardware Accelerated GPU” option helps more with new games than older games. And first of all, the number of minimum FPS grows. This means smoother gameplay. But for many, the average number of frames per second has also increased. In addition, for fewer freezes, staters, lags and freezes, any modern games need an SSD . Without it, the effect may not be as significant.
