A guide on how to fix Pnp Detected Fatal Error on Windows 10 , the blue screen error that occurs when a hardware malfunction or software incompatibility is detected.

PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR is a blue screen error (also called BSoD ) that can cause many problems to the Windows 10 operating system. The first thing to do is to understand immediately what caused the error.

Let’s start by saying that the causes that cause the PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR blue screen are different:

  • Damaged or corrupted Windows system files.
  • Viruses or malware that have damaged Windows system files.
  • Outdated system drivers.
  • Hardware or software problems.
  • Outdated Windows operating system.
  • A program running on Windows 10 crashes.
  • Connecting a PNP device ( acronym for Plug-N-Play) such as a USB drive such as headphones or microphone and driver blocker for incompatibility.

For this last point, the error codes that fall into this category are 0x000000CA (0x01681690, 0xEA96A7BE, 0x938A81AD, 0xF8362881).

How to fix Pnp Detected Fatal Error on Windows 10

Follow in detail the tips that will help you to fix PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR blue screen on Windows 10.

Update Windows

Since the Blue Screen of Death or Blue Screen of Death is caused by hardware or software incompatibility issues, the first thing to do is to keep the Windows 10 operating system up to date.

By updating Windows 10 you will be able to correct errors thanks to the various patches released by Microsoft.

Windows 10 updates are usually installed automatically, but you can still check them manually by following these steps:

  1. Press the WIN + ikey combination to open Settings .
  2. Go to the Update and Securitysection .
  3. Click on Check for updates.
  4. Windows will start scanning and downloading updates automatically
  5. At the end of the operation it will restart the computer.

Check if the PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR blue screen error has been fixed.

Update your computer drivers

The second step is to update your computer’s system drivers. Visit Microsoft’s official website or the manufacturer’s website for the installed component or software and search for available updates.

You can also take advantage of one of the many online tools that automatically update the drivers of the entire system. For further information and advice, I invite you to read this guide: How to find unknown device drivers .

Disable or remove the newly installed hardware / software

Try physically disconnecting the device connected to the PC, if you have one connected, and see if the blue screen of death error is still present.

If, on the other hand, it is a software, it starts the operating system in Safe mode . Go to Start> Settings (gear icon) Update & Security . Click on Restore in the left sidebar, and in the section Start advanced , press the button Restart now .

After your PC restarts, on the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot> Advanced options> Startup Settings> Restart .

After rebooting you will see a list of options, press F4 to boot into Safe Mode . If you need to use the Internet, press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking .

Go to Start> Settings> Apps and after selecting the offending software, press the Uninstall button . Restart your computer and check if the error has been corrected.

Disable antivirus

Even a third-party antivirus installed can cause interruptions and cause blue screen errors. Try disabling your antivirus and check if the error is still there.

Run the BSOD troubleshooter

Try running the built-in BSOD troubleshooter provided by Windows 10. It might fix the so called Blue Screen.

To do it:

  • Go to Start> Settings (gear icon)> Update & Security.
  • In the left sidebar, click on Troubleshoot.
  • In the Recommended Troubleshootingsection , set the item Run troubleshooting tools automatically, with notification .
  • Immediately under Windows it could advise and guide you in solving the problem detected.

Check the hardware

Damaged hardware is definitely another element that could cause the PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR error.

Be sure to check the RAM for damage or add more RAM. First of all check what type of RAM is installed in your PC by referring to this guide: How to see your PC’s RAM brand and model and immediately afterwards test the RAM with the Windows 10 diagnostic tool.

  • Go to Control Panel byfollowing these steps. Press WIN + r to open the Run window and type Control Panel and then press the OK button .
  • In the Panel Controlclick on System and Security> Administrative Tools .
  • Double-click on Windows Memory Diagnostics.
  • Click Restart Now and identify any problems. Before restarting, save your work in progress and close any open programs.

When the PC starts up, it will run diagnostics and run tests to see if the RAM is damaged.

When finished, the computer will restart. To check the test results:

  • Go to Control Panel byfollowing these steps. Press WIN + r to open the Run window and type Control Panel and then press the OK button .
  • In the Control Panelwindow click on System and Security> Administrative Tools .
  • Double-click Event Viewer.
  • Open the Windows Logsfolder .
  • Right-click on Systemand then click Find .
  • Type MemoryDiagnostics-Resultsand click the Find button .
  • Close the Finddialog .
  • Double-click on MemoryDiagnostics-Resultsto verify the message. If the result indicates: “ Windows Memory Diagnostic tested the computer’s memory and found no errors “, then the RAM is healthy. If not, you will need to replace one of the RAM modules .

Run ChkDsk

If the system files are damaged these can cause the PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR error in Windows 10.

Here it comes in handy to run the built-in system file checker command , called ChkDsk .

  1. Go to Start and type ” cmd” in the search bar .
  2. From the results, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator .
  3. On the black screen that appears, type sfc / scannowand press Enter.
  4. Wait for the scanning process to complete (approximately 15 minutes).
  5. And when the scanning process is finished, restart your computerand check if the Pnp Detected Fatal Error is fixed or not.

SFC will perform a full system scan and repair and replace any damaged or missing files, using the Windows component store versions.

Perform system restore

If none of the solutions listed above worked, all you have to do is perform the system restore in Windows 10 .

This will restore your system to the previous version, when there was no blue screen error yet.

Here are the steps to perform system restore:

  1. Start your PC in Safe Mode(as I pointed out above).
  2. Press the Windowskey + R and in the Run command : type exe and then press OK .
  3. Select a time period and click Next.
  4. Wait for the operation to complete.

Attention : If system protection is not activated in the Recovery settings and the maximum disk space usage is set, the recovery mode will not work.
