Preliminary operations

To identify the IP address of your printer, it is absolutely necessary that some very specific conditions occur: first of all, the printer must be turned on , correctly started and previously connected to the router that manages the home network, via cable or Wi- Fi. If you haven’t done so yet, follow my tutorial on how to install a network printer .

Having said that, there are several ways you can take to find the information you are looking for, which I am going to talk about in the following sections of this guide: use the appropriate panel of the operating system you are using, use an app third parties for smartphones / tablets, or act from the panel of the printer itself or from the management area of the router.

If you decide to operate with the help of a second device, be it a computer, a smartphone or a tablet, make sure that it is connected to the same network in use on the printer .

How to find printer IP address: Windows

If you are using a computer with a Windows operating system , you can find the IP address of a network printer very easily. If you are using a version of Windows equal to or later than Windows 10 (including Windows 11 ), right- click on the Start button of the operating system (the flag / window icon located on the taskbar, at the bottom), choose the Settings item from the menu that appears and then click on the Devices icon or on the Bluetooth and devices item .

Now, open the Printers and scanners section , click on the name of the printer of your interest visible in the list of available devices, then on the Manage button (only on Windows 10) and, finally, on the Properties / Printer properties item : the information you are looking for it should be in the field labeled Unique Identifier , Location or IP Address .

On previous editions of Windows, you can access the same screen in the following way: open the Control Panel using the appropriate item or icon in the Start / Start Screen menu , open the Hardware and Sound> Devices and Printers sections (if you do not see them , click on the drop-down menu at the top right of the Control Panel home screen and set it to the Category option ) and locate the printer name , among those listed.

Now, right-click on its icon, choose Printer Properties from the context menu that opens and click on the General tab , resident in the next screen, to get the information you want.

If, on the other hand, yours is a Mac , you can try to retrieve your printer’s IP address directly from System Preferences . So, open these by clicking on the resident gear symbol on the Dock bar, click on the Printers and Scanners icon , click on the name of your printer and click on the Options and Supplies … button : with a bit of luck, the Device IP should appear in the Location tab .

If this is not the case, act from the Terminal : start the latter using the icon available in the Go> Utilities menu of the Mac, type the command arp -ainside it and enter : by doing so, you will get the complete list of devices connected to the same network in use by the Mac: names , IP addresses and MAC addresses . All you have to do is locate the printer among the various devices listed and that’s it.

How to find printer IP address from mobile

Do you need to find the IP address of your network printer from your smartphone or tablet? Nothing simpler. In this case, all you have to do is start printing any document directly from the device in question and select the printer from the list of available devices: usually, the IP address in question is specified in correspondence with the name.

For example, if you use Android , open any image through the gallery management app you usually use (eg Google Photos ), tap the ⫶ button at the top right and tap the icon or the Print item , located in the next panel. Finally, touch the drop-down menu at the top of the page, locate the printer of your interest in the list that appears later and note the IP address immediately below its name .

The steps to take on the iPhone (and iPad ) are very similar to those seen above: open any image within the Photos app , tap on the share icon and select the Print item from the menu that appears later . Finally, touch the Printer item at the top, press the button (i) corresponding to the device of your interest and take a look at what you find written in the Position field .

If the procedures I have listed above are not useful to retrieve the information of your interest, try to perform a LAN network analysis using applications such as Fing for Android (also available on alternative markets to the Play Store ), iPhone and iPad : after downloading the app from the store on the device, open it and start the discovery of the devices on the network, by pressing the dedicated button. Once the scan is complete, locate the name of the printer (or its MAC address) in the list of devices on the network and that’s it. More info here .

And if you have a printer without a display, you must press the combination of keys that allows you to start printing a network status page : usually, it is sufficient to press and hold the information / go button while holding down the control button at the same time. activation of Wi-Fi .

Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to provide you with more precise information, as each printer model has its own procedures; what I can do, however, is show you a series of standard procedures, which you can put into practice on the printing devices produced by some well-known big names in the sector.

How to find Brother printer IP address

Almost all Brother brand printers have an LCD screen, even a small one, through which you can print the network configuration report (which includes information about the local IP address in use).

If the device is equipped with a screen with touch functions, tap the Settings icon (the wrench with the screwdriver ), select the All settings items. > Stamp. report> Network Configuration and, finally, tap Yes , to start printing.

How to find the HP printer IP address

Now let’s move on to HP branded printers . To locate the IP address of the printer, if you have a device with a screen and menu or touch-screen display, press the Wi-Fi icon or open the menu Settings> Network settings> Wireless summary : the information from you searched for is found in correspondence with the wording IP address .

If, on the other hand, you are using a printer without a screen, you must print an information page about the status of the network: to do this, press and hold the Wi-Fi keys (the one with the antenna or the cleat symbol ) and Information at the same time. How to find the printer IP from the router

Another system that you can use to trace the IP address of your printing device is to use the router management panel : inside it there is in fact an area that allows you to view the IP addresses of all devices connected to the network. , printer included.

To access the administrative area of the router, open the browser you usually use to surf the Internet, type the IP address of the router (usually corresponds to 192.168.1.1or 192.168.1.254) in the navigation bar of the program or the navigation app and press Enter . To complete the login, enter the username and password in the dedicated fields and press the button to log in ; usually, the credentials set to protect the router are printed on the adhesive label affixed to the network device.

On less modern routers, you may be able to log in without entering any passwords or using a standard combination, such as admin / admin or admin / password . In case the instructions I gave you should prove to be inaccurate, consult the guide in which I explain how to enter the router , full of useful information about it.

Once logged in, go to the section relating to Connected Devices , Local Network or LAN Settings and locate the printer name in the list of devices connected to the network (if you do not see it, proceed by exclusion): the IP address should be in his correspondence.

Unfortunately I cannot give you more precise information, as I am not aware of the exact make and model of the router in your possession; to give you an example, if you use a router from the AVM FRITZ! Box line, you must first click on the Local Network item (located on the side) and then on the word Network , in order to access the list of devices currently connected to the modem (and those that have been in the past). The printer’s IP address is placed next to its name .
