Several users reported that they were unable to download the macOS Big Sur update on the first day of the availability of the new Mac operating system.
The problems were related to Apple servers and, as also reported in the Apple “System Status” web page (an Apple web page that allows you to know the operating status of various servers and services at any time), some users are not were actually able to download software updates. Try Software Update
The update can be downloaded by opening the System Preferences, selecting “Software Update” and clicking on “Update now” next to the indication of the update. If this method doesn’t work and you keep seeing error messages, the best alternative is to download the update from the Mac App Store.

1) Open the Mac App Store
2) in the search field at the top left write “Big Sur” (without quotes) and click on “View” in the screen on the right that shows the new system. Alternatively, click on this link .
3) The update is proposed and from here you can click on “Get”, wait for the download to complete and follow the instructions.
Other problems that could prevent the update
– Make sure your computer is connected to the internet
– Restart your Mac
– Make sure that the System Date and Time are correct (go to System Preferences, select “Date and Time” and activate the option “Automatically set date and time” if necessary).
– Restart the modem
– Check the DNS by opening the “Network” item in the System Preferences, click in the left section according to the type of connection used (WiFi or Ethernet), click on “Advanced”, open the “DNS” tab, specify the DNS server as in the screen below, click on “Ok”, then “Apply” and try to download the update again.
