How to Create and Use Luma Matte Transitions with After Effects in 9 Steps

Step 1
Open the After Effects program and in the right part of the dialog box, you are going to press the option “new project” with that you will have the program interface ready to work.
Step 2
Now you are going to create a new sequence for the video, to do so press “Ctrl + N” on your keyboard , a dialog box will open where we can modify the characteristics of the photomontage so that it is according to your needs, you can leave the parameters that it gives you the default program, after that press «OK».
Step 3
Now on the left side of your screen in the “Projects” window, place the images that you will integrate in the photomontage, to do that (if you have the images on your desktop) click on the image and without stopping pressing, drag or take it to the “Projects” window, is the place where it says “Name_type_size” you can place all the images you need.
Step 4
With the images at our fingertips , take the first one you want to modify by dragging it (as we did previously) towards the bottom of our design interface, that is, in the “Timeline” window where the layers that will be created as you add more will appear. effects to your photomontage, if you also use Photoshop you will see that you will become familiar very quickly with this area of the program.
Step 5
After dragging the image to the area that we explain, it will appear in the upper window also called “Composition” where we can see how our work is looking .
If you need to modify the image a little, either because it does not fit well in the window, just click on the image that is in the “Composition” screen, that action will activate the function to change the size.
Step 6
With everything ready you are going to take the effect that you downloaded at the beginning with the link that we provide, in your download folder you are going to drag that effect in the “Timeline” window this will make you see it in the “Composition” window.
To change the sequence, you can go to the right part of the “Timeline” called “Animations”, you will notice that it is like a sound mixer where you can modify the effect by speeding up or slowing down the speed to your needs.
Step 7
With the red line with a yellow point at the top you can see the effect sequences, you just have to click on it and without stopping pressing, drag the line to the right. You will notice that this effect is in black and white that we will easily change.
Step 8
We are going to replace the white part of the effect, for this go to “Timeline” and click on the tab that says “None” so a list of options will be displayed, press the one that says “Luma matte”.
In case the “None” tab does not appear, go to the bottom of your screen and press “Check definitions / modes”. With this ready go to “Preview” and press the “Play” button and you will see the video with the Luma Matte transition , you just need to add a background to remove the black part and finish the job.
Step 9
Place another image in “Timeline” as we did with the first one, you will automatically see that the image in the “Composition” window is well integrated into the montage.
