SmartArt

To create a concept map with Word, start by opening the editor on your PC or Mac and selecting Blank Document. Then, click on the Insert item in the top menu and choose the SmartArt item , located in the Illustrations section.

In the next window, choose the Hierarchies category and select one of the available templates. I recommend using the Hierarchical template to create an effective mind map, but you can also try the Horizontal Organization Chart or Horizontal Hierarchical template .

After choosing the template, press OK to add the map to your Word document. At this point, you can customize the concept map using the Type text here window , which allows you to enter information into the concept map. To add new items to the map, use the Type text here window and select one of the items in the top bar. For example, you can use Promote to move up a level in the hierarchy or Add Shape to add new shapes to the map.

To change the graphic style of the concept map, go to the SmartArt Styles section and change the colors of the boxes or the applied style. If you want to add a new shape to the map, click on one of the templates available in the Layout section.

If you need more concept maps that are useful for school projects, brainstorming, or organized work, you can find them by clicking Insert , then SmartArt , and then Cycle . These templates feature arrows and can be used to indicate a series of cyclical events or a cycle in nature, such as the water cycle or the Krebs cycle.

Draw a concept map in Word

To create a concept map using Microsoft Word, you can use the Shapes function , which allows you to create each individual element of the map without having to follow a precise hierarchy. To get started, open a blank sheet in Word and select the Insert menu in the toolbar. Subsequently, press the button Shapes present in the Illustrations section, and select the shapes present in the Rectangles, Lines and Arrows section.

Once you’ve created your concept map tiles, right-click on each one and select Add Text to insert your text. To customize the colors of the tiles, select each tile and click the Shape Format menu in the toolbar. Use the options in the Shape Styles sections to change the text color, fill color, and border color. In this way you will be able to create a personalized and well-structured concept map, using the tools offered by Word.
