How to be offline on WhatsApp

Tell the truth, surely you too will have, at least once, accessed WhatsApp just to write a quick message to a friend and, shortly after, to be literally stormed by one or more contacts who, seeing you online, they didn’t hesitate to write to you. In such circumstances, being offline in the eyes of others would be very convenient; it’s just a pity that the popular messaging app doesn’t offer such a feature.

However, this absolutely does not mean that, thanks to some stratagems, a result in some ways similar cannot be obtained. If this interests you (and, considering the fact that you are now reading these lines, I would say yes), then allow me to illustrate them, explaining, therefore, how to be offline on WhatsApp : I can already immediately assure you that you will not have to do anything particularly complex.

Then? What are you still doing standing there? Sit down comfortably, take five minutes or so of free time all to yourself, take your mobile phone (Android or iPhone makes no difference, you can succeed on both types of devices and, moreover, you can also apply solutions acting as a PC) and immediately start reading this guide dedicated to the subject. I sincerely hope that in the end you can feel very happy and satisfied with what you have learned. Have a good reading.

Preliminary information

Before moving on to the actual action, it seems to me necessary to make some clarifications regarding the subject matter of this tutorial.

As also written at the beginning, unfortunately currently WhatsApp does not offer a real function that allows its users to be offline, similarly, however, to how it happened with old (and not only) messaging services for computers, for example Windows Live Messenger , or how you can do with regards to Facebook chat .

That said, if your intent is to be offline on WhatsApp while being online , you will be happy to know that there are some features of the app that can be exploited to obtain a result that is in some ways similar or that in any case can help. to avoid being “bothered” by your contacts when the time is not right.

To be precise, I refer to the possibility to disable the display of information relating to the last access and to that functionality of the messaging app that allows you to disable the display of the blue double check , which allows you to know if a message has actually been read. or less. In the most extreme cases, then, you can proceed by blocking certain contacts.

Another solution to be offline, in the most literal sense of the term, is to disable the Internet connection on the mobile phone used. This, as you can guess, will not only affect WhatsApp but also all the other apps and services that can be used by the device.

If you want, you can combine one or more of the “techniques” in question, nothing prevents you, it all depends on what your needs and requirements are.

Therefore, to apply them, all you have to do is follow the instructions I am about to give you in the next chapters, in order to implement them in the WhatsApp app for Android (downloadable from the Play Store , the official website or alternative stores ) and for iOS (downloadable from the App Store ).

Furthermore, where possible, below I will also explain how to be offline on WhatsApp Web , indicating, in fact, how to proceed from a PC , using WhatsApp Web or the desktop client or WhatsApp application for Windows and macOS . Read on to find out more.

Deactivate the last login

As I said, the first thing I recommend you do to be offline on WhatsApp is to deactivate the function that allows you to view the date and time of the last access : in this way, other users will not be able to know at what precise moment you are. connected the last time to the famous messaging service and therefore will not be able to determine when, in fact, you used WhatsApp and when you did not. However, reciprocally, you yourself will not be able to view this information about other users.

The procedure to follow to disable the display of the last access on WhatsApp varies according to the mobile platform in use. In any case, below you will find explained how to act on both Android and iOS .

Furthermore, since these operations are reversible if, after reading the following instructions, you think you need more explanations on what to do, you can refer to my tutorial dedicated specifically to how to remove the last WhatsApp access .

Android

To start, take your Android smartphone , unlock it, access the screen where there are the icons of all the installed applications and tap on the WhatsApp one .

Then, press the button (…)  located at the top right, select the Settings item in the menu that appears and go to the Account> Privacy panel .

At this point, presses on the Last Access option and select None from the menu that is shown to you.

iOS

To act on iOS, take your iPhone , unlock it, access the home screen and tap on the WhatsApp icon to start the messaging app.

Once this is done, presses the Settings item located at the bottom right, select the Account item in the new screen displayed and tap the word Privacy .

Subsequently, select the item Last accessed and, to conclude, tap on the None option .

Disable the double blue check

The double blue check of WhatsApp allows you to know if a message has been viewed or not by the person to whom it was sent. Consequently, it also allows you to determine whether the person who received it was online or not. Disabling the function in question can, therefore, be useful for carrying out the operation covered by this tutorial.

But how can you disable this feature? It is very simple, just take action on the WhatsApp settings , as explained below.

Before proceeding, however, I would like to inform you that, by turning off the display of the blue ticks, not only other users will not be able to know if you have actually read their messages but you, in turn, will not be able to know if the people with whom you are in contact have actually read what you wrote.

Also, for further information and, in case of doubts or problems on how to return to the previous settings, read my guide on how to disable WhatsApp blue ticks .

Android

To act on Android , start the WhatsApp app , press the button (…) located at the top right and select the Settings item from the menu that appears.

Then go to the Account> Privacy panel , scroll to the bottom of the screen that opens and move the item Read confirmations to OFF .

iOS

To act on iOS start the WhatsApp app on your iPhone , then select the Settings item at the bottom right and then the Account .

Once this is done, press the word Privacy and turn OFF the switch that you find in correspondence with the Read Confirmations item located at the bottom.

Block a contact

Do you want to be offline on WhatsApp only for some contacts ? If so, you might want to consider blocking the contacts in question.

By doing so, such people will no longer be able to see you online and all the messages they send you will never be delivered to you, always being marked with a single gray tick. I know, the solution is a bit drastic but, as they say, to extreme evils, extreme remedies.

If you are interested in finding out how to proceed to block a particular contact, follow the instructions on what to do for Android , iOS and PC (this can be done using the WhatsApp application for Windows and macOS and the Web version of the service), which you find below.

Before proceeding, I remind you that, by blocking a contact on WhatsApp , not only other users will no longer be able to contact you but you, in turn, will not be able to write to them, until you proceed with an eventual unblocking.

Also, in case of doubts or problems, or if you think you need more information on what to do, I invite you to refer to my tutorial on how to block a person on WhatsApp .

Android

To block a contact on WhatsApp from Android , locate the contact you want to block from the Chat screen , press his name at the top and select the Block item twice in a row, in the new screen displayed.

To unblock the previously blocked user, tap the (…) button  located at the top right of the WhatsApp home screen and select the Settings item from the menu that appears.

Then go to the Account> Privacy panel , tap on the Blocked contacts item , press the contact to unblock and press the word  Unblock to confirm the operation.

iOS

To act on the iPhone , instead, start the WhatsApp app and open the chat with the person to be blocked, then press the person’s name which is located at the top to see the Contact Info section .

At this you tap on the item Block contact and confirm the operation by pressing the Block button . In case of second thoughts, press the Unblock contact button .

Alternatively, press the Settings item at the bottom right in the main WhatsApp menu , then tap on the one called Account , press the word Privacy and tap the word Blocked .

In the new screen that appears, select the Add item , choose from the list that is shown the contact you want to block and that’s it.

At a later time, if you have thought about it, press the name of the contact you want to unblock, scroll down his information card and tap on the word Unblock contact .

PC

If you want to block a user from a PC , start the WhatsApp application on your computer or access WhatsApp Web by scanning the QR code , to see the list of all active chats.

Once this is done, click on the chat relating to the contact to be blocked and, on the side screen, click on the icon (…) located at the top right. Once this is done, select the Contact Info item and, finally, click the Block button  (below) twice in a row.

In case of second thoughts, go back to the Contact Info tab and select the Unblock item twice in a row.

Deactivate the Internet connection

The only real way to be offline on WhatsApp , there is little to do, is to be truly offline, or to disable the Wi-Fi and / or cellular data connection on the device used.

Obviously, by doing so, in addition to being not connected on WhatsApp you will not even receive the related notifications and all the other apps and services that need Internet on your device will not be functional, until you re-enable the connection.

Having said that, if you still want to proceed, let’s see immediately how to disable Wi-Fi and data connection on Android and iPhone (on the computer it is not necessary, as disconnecting the mobile phone will automatically disconnect the application used on Windows as well. and macOS and the web version of the service).

For more information regarding wireless connectivity, you can refer to my guide on how to turn off Wi-Fi.

Android

To disable the Internet connection on Android you must take into account that the procedure may vary slightly, depending on the model of smartphone you own.

In any case, to do this, you can simply press on the Wi-Fi icon or on the Data network icon in the Android control panel that you can see by scrolling from top to bottom.

Alternatively, access the screen where there are the icons of all the apps and press the Settings icon (the one with the gear ).

In the new screen that appears, select the Wi-Fi and network item , then turn the lever relating to Wi-Fi to OFF , in order to disable it.

To disable the data connection, on the other hand, go back to the main Settings screen , press the Sim and network item and turn OFF the lever in correspondence with the Mobile data item on the next screen.

iOS

To turn off the connection to Wi-Fi or data network on iPhone can simply act by the Control Center of iOS .

Therefore, on iPhone X or later, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen, or if you’re using an older iPhone model, swipe from the bottom of the screen to the top. Once this is done, deactivate the buttons related to Wi-Fi (the cleats) or cellular data (the antenna), by pressing on them.

Alternatively, access the home screen and press the Settings icon (the one with the gear ). At this point, to deactivate the Wi-Fi connection, press the Wi-Fi item and turn the relative switch to OFF .

Instead, to disable the data connection , go back to the main settings screen, press the word Cellular and turn OFF the lever located next to the Cellular data item .

App to be offline on WhatsApp

Wondering if it is possible to use apps to be offline on WhatsApp as an alternative to the solutions provided in this tutorial? In this case I must absolutely warn you of such intentions and invite you not to make use of solutions of this type .

If you use any apps that modify the WhatsApp app or client , you could seriously compromise the security of your account and expose it to serious risks of compromising privacy: be careful!
