How smoking marijuana affects the chances of conceiving a child

A new study suggests that women who use marijuana before conceiving are less likely to get pregnant compared to those who do not.

A study by the US National Institutes of Health links such indicators, among other things, with the level of reproductive hormones.

The researchers analyzed data from a broader study of over 1,200 women between the ages of 18 and 40 who had one or two miscarriages. Women participated in the study for up to six monthly cycles when trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy if conception occurred.

After being included in the study, the women responded to a questionnaire asking if they had used marijuana, marijuana or hashish in the past 12 months.

The researchers found that among women trying to conceive, those who reported using marijuana or who had a positive urine test for the drug were 40% less likely to become pregnant during each monthly cycle compared to those who did not use marijuana.

According to the study, only 42% of women who used cannabis were able to get pregnant. Among women who did not use marijuana, pregnancy occurred in 66% of cases. In addition, marijuana users had differences in levels of certain reproductive hormones, which could potentially affect their chances of getting pregnant.

The authors found no difference in the frequency of miscarriages between pregnant women who used and did not use cannabis.

” These results highlight the potentially harmful links between cannabis use and reproductive health effects,” researchers at the US National Institutes of Health ( NIH) wrote in their study published January 11 in the journal Human Reproduction.

In 2019, HB wrote that according to a study by scientists from the United States, smoking marijuana during pregnancy is as dangerous as drinking alcohol , and can lead to premature birth, as well as weight loss in the baby.

The researchers conducted experiments on rats and zebrafish. Cannabinoids affected genes and cell communication in animal embryos in the same way as alcohol, they said.

In addition, the use of alcohol and marijuana together significantly increase the risks of negative changes in fetal formation and increase the likelihood of developing fetal alcohol syndrome.

The consequences of this syndrome can be pathological changes in the appearance of children, problems with hearing, vision, memory, attention, learning, as well as disturbances in the control of emotions and behavior.
