How to win Gold, Platinum and Diamond Discs and the necessary sales to get them.

How are the Gold , Platinum and Diamond Discounts awarded ? What requirements must an artist have to obtain a Gold, Platinum or Diamond Disc? In this article, we explain the award methods and sales thresholds required to earn rewards.

The Gold, Platinum and Diamond Disc certifications are the prizes that an artist can collect based on the number of copies sold of albums and singles, both in physical and digital version and streaming (from January 2018 only the ratings  derived from premium subscription services).

Country you go, custom you find! The criteria used to analyze sales vary from country to country: in some the system is adopted that counts the numbers of albums sold to stores and therefore not necessarily to the end user, while in others the albums sold by stores and purchased by a end user .

Album and compilation certification category

In light of the new market conditions, FIMI and GfK recognize, starting from 1 January 2014, the following certification thresholds (physical and online product):

  • GOLD over 25,000
  • PLATINUM over 50,000
  • DOUBLE PLATINUM over 100,000
  • TRIPLE PLATINUM over 150,000
  • PLATINUM QUADRUPLE over 200,000
  • 5 PLATINUM over 250,000
  • DIAMOND over 500,000

Singles

For the online market (download + streaming from 11/09/2014), FIMI has updated the thresholds for the attribution of individual certifications as follows (in force from week 01/2020):

  • GOLD over 35,000
  • PLATINUM over 70,000
  • DOUBLE PLATINUM over 140,000
  • TRIPLE PLATINUM over 210,000
  • PLATINUM QUADRUPLE over 280,000
  • 5 PLATINUM over 350,000
  • 6 PLATINUM over 420,000
  • 7 PLATINUM over 490,000
  • 8 PLATINUM over 560,000
  • 9 PLATINUM over 630,000
  • DIAMOND over 700,000

How is the sales count done?

FIMI releases weekly the official Top Of The Music rankings – available on  www.fimi.it –  relating to the sale of:

  • Album & Compilation  [ physical support purchase + digital store purchase + streaming listening with subscription service ]
  • Vinyls  [ physical support purchase ]
  • Single  [ digital store purchase + streaming listening with subscription service where 130 streams are equivalent to 1 download. All streams are counted as long as they last longer than 30 seconds]

In particular, FIMI releases the following rankings:

  • Top 100 Albums & Compilations : the 100 albums and compilations with the highest number of sales and plays detected within the represented channels
  • Top 20 Vinyls: the 20 vinyls with the highest number of sales recorded within the represented channels
  • Top 100 Singles: the 100 songs with the highest number of downloads and with the highest number of premium streaming listenings detected within the represented channels

The data is processed by GfK Italia during the week: from Friday to the following Thursday. The monitored sales channels are:

  • Hypermarket and Supermarket
  • Technical SuperStore (large distribution specialized in consumer electronics)
  • Entertainment Specialist (chains specialized in multi-sector entertainment: Music, Books, Videos and Games)
  • Music Independent specialist
  • Internet Sales (sales of physical music through websites)
  • Audio Streaming Platforms

The rankings are released within the fifth working day following the reference week.
