Holidays in the United States

The public holidays in the United States highlights are the famous Thanksgiving , the Day of Independence and the popular and highly publicized Halloween .

In the country there are a large number of events and festivities that are celebrated throughout the year, commemorating important historical events, religious holidays or traditions that have been ingrained since the beginning of American societies and cultures.

Next, we describe the official holidays in the USA. Due to their great importance at the national level, most are declared holidays.

United States Holidays and Events

 

January

New Years in Times Square

  • January 1 – New Year:The New Year begins on December 31 at night. It is symbolized by a band printed with the number of the coming year, a baby in diapers or a festive hat. While the “old year” is represented by an old man with a white beard and a tunic with an hourglass who is called “Father of Time.”

The countdown is usually carried out in Times Square, where a crystal ball descends. The Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl in California also take place.

Martin Luther King Jr.

  • 3rd Monday in January – Martin Luther King Jr Day:The third Monday of the month commemorates the Birth of Martin Luther King , who defended the rights of African American descendants and was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

February

Valentine’s Day

  • February 2: Groundhog Day
  • February 14 – Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th.
  • 3rd Monday in February – President’s Day: This is a public tribute to two of your most respected presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. It lasts for 10 days.

March

Saint Patrick’s day

  • March 17: A show is held on Fifth Avenue in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
  • March 25: Greek immigrants commemorate their independence on the day. On Fifth Avenue there is a parade where the traditional dish, souvlakis, and music are present.
  • Mardi Gras: The Mardi Gras is mainly celebrated in Miami and New Orleans , where music has no end and joy began in January, without forgetting the Black Heritage Festival , with performances by Gospell and jazz.

April

Patriot day

In April the Holy Week processions are replaced in the United States of America by colorful parades. The highlight is the Florida Easter Parade , which starts from St. Patrick’s Cathedral and crosses Fifth Avenue (New York). It’s a good time to see the best and worst of American fashion.

In New Orleans, the French Quarter Festival is distinguished , with street performances and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival , with the best musicians of the moment.

Newport Jazz Festival

  • Jazz Month: Jazz music events are held at the beginning of the month in New York . Newport Jazz Festival is a series of concerts in the streets, and in some theaters and the Music for a City Evening, with many singers in the Rockefeller Center area join in the celebration. For classical music, Central Park, where the Metropolitan Opera Company, performs the works of the great classics.
  • Saint Anthony of Padua Day: It is a celebration of Italian immigrants. Held in New York, it consists of sporting events and maritime events at the South Street Seaport, the Stars and Stripes Regatta, and the Liberty Cup .
  • June 14: Flag Day
  • The third Friday in June: Father’s Day

July

Celebrations for the Independence Day of the United States.

  • American Independence Day: On July 4 commemorative parades are held with impressive fireworks. Starting at 9:00 p.m. in River Side Park (New York), all the fireworks are lit to celebrate the great Independence Day.

It is perhaps one of the most important celebrations in this country and therefore the festivities are usually very spectacular and grand, fireworks and airplane parades are part of these celebrations.

August

  • Greenwich Village Jazz Festival:It takes place in New York.

September

Caribbean Carnival in Brooklyn

Caribbean Carnival: Held on the first Sunday of September in Brooklyn and New York .

Labor Day: On the date there is a parade down Fifth Avenue.

San Genaro: In the different Little Italy for ten days the Neapolitans commemorate San Genaro with lots of food and entertainment throughout the streets.

October

Celebration in the streets for Halloween.

  • 2nd Monday in October:Christopher Columbus Day.
  • Day of the Americas:On October 12, Columbus Day is celebrated.
  • New York Marathon:They start from Staten Island to finish in Central Park.
  • Halloween:Where costumed children roam the streets asking for candy. As part of the celebrations, most of the main avenues and large stores decorate their facades for this reason to give a special view of the city on the occasion of this celebration.

November

Mass for Thanksgiving Day.

Since 2001, World Freedom Day has been celebrated in commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the communist regime in Central and Western Europe . While Thanksgiving Day (in English Thanksgiving) is the most important traditional holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month of November in the United States, the commemoration of the end of the Civil War is celebrated and in New York an impressive parade down Broadway .

December

Christmas in USA

In December Christmas comes with good wishes and peace. The streets and houses are filled with ornaments, decorations, colored lights, etc.
Santa Claus is on every corner with his bell and the children wait the next day to see the gifts that Santa Claus brought them at night.
