Toponymy

It is known as Cabra Corral, because the North American company in charge of the topographical surveys for the future work, placed the titles “Cabra Corral” instead of “Corral de Cabras” in their folders.

Location

Located at the confluence of the Guachipas to the south originating in the Valles Calchaquíes and Rosario to the north with its tributaries, the Arias, Arenales and Chicoana rivers. From its drainage through the hydroelectric plant or its spillway, the river takes the name of Pasaje or Juramento.

Description

The complex was built between 1966 and 1972 , by the company Panedille Hnos. of Italian and Argentine capital.

The dam has a height of 93 m (the maximum: 113.75 m), higher than the Chocón with its 86 m.

The capacity of the reservoir is 2,880 hm³, which makes it one of the largest in the country. Comparing with other reservoirs: San Roque 200 hm³; Hondo River : 1000 hm³; Third River : 500 hm³. The total area of the reservoir is 115 km², and it is 18 km long in a north-south direction. Like any reservoir, it required the construction of other compensators to regulate the flooding of the Juramento River , the Miraflores and El Tunal reservoirs. Together, they allow to irrigate 100,000 ha.

Since its access is from upstream, through the two main rivers, it became necessary to build a bridge over the Guachipas River . This bridge has hollow pillars 6 dm thick; “Franki” type piles on the riverbed. The piles support prestressed beams, flexible in case of earthquakes. It has a gauge of 7 m.

The hydroelectric plant is integrated into the “National Interconnected Energy System” with the production of hydroelectric energy, with three turbines.

Fishing is chosen by the sports fishermen of Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán because there are seven species: pejerrey, the most appreciated from a sporting point of view, toothy fish, tararira, catfish, flashmouth, mojarras, sábalos and yuscas.

Discs

The Tunal and Miraflores. The most important works in execution, carried out by the province of Salta to make full use of the Cabra Corral, are the El Tunal stationary dam and the Miraflores diversion dam.

activities on the dam

The Cabra Corral Dam complex allows for a number of diverse activities, including:

  • Walks around the islands
  • Jet ski rides
  • Bungee • Tirolesa • Rappel • Canopy
  • Rafting • Kayak
  • Mountain Bike
  • 4×4 crossings

Cuenca

The breadth of its basin places it in third place in the region, surpassed by the Bermejo and Dulce systems. The complex was completed with the Cabra Corral headwater dam, a daily compensating dam in Peñas Blancas, the diversion for irrigation in Miraflores, and the daily seasonal compensator and regulator for the middle basin in El Tunal.

The Juramento river hydroelectric system is one of the largest in the NOA
