Fix: Trash cannot be opened at the moment because it is being used by another task

If you use the Recycle Bin on macOS you may run into this error that ” .Trash cannot be opened right now because it is being used by another task .” In the following tutorial we will tell you step by step how to solve it.

.Trash cannot be opened at the moment because it is being used by another task: Solution

This error message can appear in the recycle bin, specifically, if you try to empty it in macOS Mojave . It is an error that sometimes appears when you click on “empty trash”. But why does it happen and how is it solved?

It’s definitely a bit weird, because we usually don’t have a problem emptying the trash. It’s as easy as click and go. However, when this happens, it cannot be solved in this way.

The usual thing is to try to restart the Mac or delete everything in ~ / .Trash .  However, if it does not work for you, you have to move on to the following.

What is happening? It seems that in the folder ~ / .Trash “the files you send to the trash were not actually there. A user who had this problem and wanted to fix it, saw that the actual trash was stored elsewhere, it was another folder different.

Where to find the location of that folder? Which? For that particular user, he found it at the following path: ~ / Library / Mobile Documents / com ~ apple ~ clouddocs / .Trash . If it happens to you, it could be a similar route (by trying you don’t lose anything).

What was happening is that by having iCloud Drive running on that machine, it was syncing the contents of the Trash. In the iCloud .Trash folder were the files stored there and also a .DS_Store file .

After deleting the .DS_Store file from the iCloud folder the problem kept coming up. But it was finally solved by deleting the entire folder . How is it erased? Open a command terminal or console and copy and paste the following:

sudo rm -rf ~ / Library / Mobile \ Documents / com ~ apple ~ clouddocs / .Trash

If it doesn’t work for you, your route may be different, if you have it in Spanish for example. By doing that problem solved. You can now empty the recycle bin on Mac without getting the error message of .Trash cannot be opened at this time because it is being used by another task.
