Duration

The episode lasts less than a couple of minutes and the person recovers quickly and completely. You may feel dizzy or dizzy before fainting. A longer and deeper state of unconsciousness is often called a coma.

When the person passes out, not only does he lose consciousness but he also loses muscle tone and color to the face (paleness). Similarly, you may feel weak or nauseated just before you pass out, and you may feel that the noises around you are fading into the background.

Causes

This reaction of the organism can be motivated by emotional reasons, such as fear, joy, strong pain, claustrophobia, suffering, it can even occur after a risky situation.

They are very common in older people, as a reaction in some medications for allergies, nasal congestion, pressure, due to a drop in blood pressure or another reason. These people should be especially careful if they work or play on very hot days, if they breathe very quickly (hyperventilation), if they stop quickly or if they are angry or upset.

Another cause may be the fact that a person is lying down and stands up violently or quickly.

Also if you are dehydrated or have not eaten in a period of time which can cause a drop in blood sugar or if you suffer from diabetes.

Using alcohol and drugs like cocaine are other reasons why a person may pass out.

Fainting can occur for more serious or worrying but less common reasons such as heart disease, stroke, epileptic seizures, among others.

Treatment measures

  • Inspect the person’s airway and breathing.
  • Loosen tight clothing around the neck.
  • Raise the person’s feet above the level of the heart (plus or minus 12 inches or about 30 cm).
  • If the person has vomited, turn them on their side to avoid drowning.
  • Keep the person lying down for at least 10 to 15 minutes, preferably in a cool and calm space. If this is not possible, sit her in front with her head between her knees.
  • If you are an epileptic, you should avoid getting stuck with your tongue.
  • If the fainted person regurgitates, it is necessary to put it on its side so that it does not suffocate with its own vomit.
