Erik Hornung . One of the most famous Egyptologists in the world and one of the most influential modern writers who have dealt with the ancient Egyptian religion. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Basel .

Biography
Hornung was born in Riga , Latvia in 1933 . His family migrated to Germany when he was six years old, after the Soviet invasion of his country. He studied Germanic Philology in Tübingen and Göttingen between 1952 and 1956 . In this last year he obtained his doctorate in Egyptology in Tübingen, with a thesis on night and darkness in the Egyptian worldview.
He was Professor of Egyptology, first at the University of Münster and later at the Egyptological Seminary at the University of Basel from 1967 to 1998 , since then Professor Emeritus. His main field of research has been funeral literature , of the Valley of the Kings in particular. He published the first edition of the Amduat Book in three volumes between 1963 and 1967. He has been considered the highest authority on this type of literature.
Hornung became Vice-President of the Society of the Friends of the Royal Tombs of Egypt in 1988 . After the unification of Germany, he was appointed director of the magazine Zeitschrift für ägyptische Sprache und Altertumskunde , the oldest of this discipline, founded in 1863 . He is a member of the German Institute of Archeology.
