The role of economic diplomacy and embassies

Among the duties that a diplomat performs, it has always been important to strengthen the economy of the country. In fact, they will determine at a given moment what their role will be and where to reach it. Looking at the early age of diplomacy, we see that people used to cross the borders of the country for commercial purposes. This is how relations between people, people, people, and other people originate.

In the present era, diplomacy has given equal importance to political and economic activities in real sense. The developed world and developing countries give special guidance to their diplomatic missions in expanding foreign investment and trade. Some of the world’s largest countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, Russia, some trade and trade affairs through the Embassy under the direct supervision of their Foreign Ministry; At other times, some countries conduct trade and commerce activities, including foreign relations, through the embassy in a coordinated structure of different ministries. However, whatever the mode of operation, the objective of all countries is the same and common. Economic issues have been mixed with politics and diplomacy. That is, the economy has been established in the meantime as one of the elements of the “integrated diplomacy”.

As a diplomat must understand global politics, he must integrate economic affairs in all his activities. The political and economic aspects of the headquarters, ie, the foreign ministry, are intertwined with bilateral and multilateral activities. But in the case of the embassy, every diplomat has to deal with the aspect of his political relations with the same importance as economic relations. Just as political ties can strengthen economic ties, economic ties can play a role in building a strong bilateral relationship. In fact, diplomacy is no longer a matter of separating political and economic issues. Diplomacy now has to be defined in the combined section of the two. And that combined path is the current diplomat’s workplace.

A diplomat must have the courage to accept the results of his efforts, as he must be prepared to take on the challenge of implementing the policy of economic diplomacy in his country. In fact, the activities of the economic sector can give a diplomat more opportunity to do something innovative than other fields of diplomacy. And to do these things requires proper assumptions about interest and strategy. Many times the results of the initial phase of work may not seem promising, but in the end it preserves the country’s economic interests. Undoubtedly, these are very challenging tasks for a diplomat and he must hold that in mind. The success of a diplomat depends on how well he has been able to deliver the most results in his work.

The economic development strategy of a country depends on international standards, depending on the export potential and prospects of the country, the details of the authorized market and the manner of presenting information about the products in those markets, development of promotional strategies and identifying the obstacles that may arise in reaching the target. The embassy’s job is to notify the relevant ministries or institutions, including the foreign ministries of their respective countries, about the market in that country. Information must be verified before sending it. In addition to these reports, it is recommended to have specific recommendations on the Embassy’s views and actions for the Government. It is my belief that such reports enable the government to play an effective role in determining policy.

The contribution of Bangladeshi workers working abroad is very important to keep the wheels of Bangladesh economy moving. The remittance that our migrant workers send is one of our biggest earnings. For this reason, we need to look very carefully at this source of foreign exchange. And since our embassies have to play a leading role in the entire process of worker migration, they must also have the necessary manpower and readiness. The government of Bangladesh seems to have more to do with the embassies (especially where the concentration of our staff is higher) and the weak ones. In order to ensure the services of migrant workers, the Embassy must have that capability.

Apart from political, cultural and religious importance, the present government is giving great importance to establishing Bangladesh embassies in countries where significant number of citizens are engaged in the activities. In addition, some of our embassies have labor branches in the embassies, which have been taken to strengthen those who usually care for Bangladeshi workers. However, diplomatic branches work in embassies where there is no labor branch.

A ‘task force’ can be set up at the Embassy to create demand for our exportable products, to increase and to care for migrant citizens. Many may say that the embassies in which the trade branches are, the direction of trade and where the labor branch is, they will look after the affairs of the migrant workers. But from my experience, I can say that all those working together in the embassy can get good results. It has also been shown that even when all together, there is so much work pressure that it is difficult to solve all the tasks in time with limited workforce. Given our limitations, the Embassy as a team can do all this work under the leadership of the Embassy, regardless of branch. In addition, in countries where Bangladeshis are high-ranking and big business owners, They can also be used in different ways. In this case, they too can make a valuable contribution to the economic development of their homeland. However, in this case, the embassy will take steps to take into consideration the surrounding conditions, so that there will be no unwanted problems in place of the fruit.

The primary responsibility of those who work in our embassy is to strengthen our political relationship with that country. And second, that is what is most important to us is to find a market for the export of our products and services; To increase cooperation and expand existing markets. Our diplomats are the direct means of communicating with the Government of Bangladesh and the non-governmental organizations working in these matters. Therefore, it is important to remember that in order to get the benefit of their endeavors, there is a need for careful and clear preparation so that the interests of the two countries are protected. It will be easier if our diplomats know enough about these things. It goes without saying that diplomats in Bangladesh need to be well-informed about the economic dynamics of Bangladesh and the workplace.

We have a significant number of immigrants in several countries. In addition, diplomats working in our embassies are working tirelessly to determine the possibility of sending our staff to many countries. However, it must be done with more challenges. In order to meet the aspirations of Bangladesh, we have to think of new ways of working in this regard. In order to understand the position of the country, how to increase the rate of hiring of workers from our country, arrangements should be made to take necessary plans. By establishing a cordial relationship with the recruiting company or person, there are good results for recruiting new employees from Bangladesh and dealing with the working Bangladeshi. In this way, our embassies can play the role of co-ordinator on the one hand, and on the other hand, by making all the problems and advice of the working Bangladeshis abroad, they can make their lives abroad easier and more comfortable.

Most of those who work in the labor branch of our embassy are officers of the administration cadre. Their tenure at the Embassy is usually four years and they get this opportunity only once in their lifetime. There is no labor cadre in our country. Even no effective training is provided for the elected officials for the labor branch of the embassy. Therefore, it can be said that they are assigned to this complex task without any necessary experience or ideas in this regard. It is difficult to get optimistic results from them for the right reasons. In this case, they can not be blamed. That’s how things are going. The authorities concerned need to give more importance to this matter. But embassies that do not have labor branches, Especially in countries where our migrant workers are few, foreign affairs cadre diplomats care for immigrants. It is their experience that gives them the strength to complete this task efficiently. In light of the fact, it is not recommended that a practical short-term (at least a month) immigration training be arranged for those selected for the Labor Branch before leaving for work. I believe that if this is done, the officers working in the labor branch will be able to achieve the desired success by performing the duties assigned to them more efficiently.

Our experience says that immigration jobs provide us with opportunities to innovate. That is why our diplomats have to be active minded. Depending on the situation, new strategies have to be worked out, so that the results can be promising. In addition, close communication and personal relations with people who can play a strong role in strengthening and expanding the economic ties of the local, especially the two countries, should be made. Such a relationship can greatly facilitate the successful execution of a diplomat’s work. In addition, it is not only the officers of the labor branch, but all the officers of the embassy can be assigned the responsibility of serving the migrant workers when needed. There will be at least one meeting with officials every week, Where possible, all possible issues will be discussed, including the work of the Embassy and the performance of its duties. I personally followed the trend. Every Monday (on holidays or the next convenient day if busy with emergency work) I had weekly meetings with all the officers of my embassy at 9am. At that meeting, I discussed the current and future affairs of the Embassy. Who would openly share his views. As a result, my decision making and direction were much easier. Apart from this, I also held meetings with the Embassy staff and arranged necessary discussions and guidance. In most cases, it has been found to be of great benefit. Maybe, like me, many of our ambassadors have such meetings.
