Understanding Discipline

The word discipline comes from the Latin word Discare which means learning. Next from that word comes the word Disciplina which means teaching or training. Discipline also comes from English namely Disciple which means that is a follower or student.

In addition to this understanding discipline is also interpreted differently by several experts including:

Understanding of discipline according to experts

    • According to Handoko (2001: 208), the word discipline means management activities to carry out organizational standards. This means discipline as a reference for organizations to determine the standards carried out in the organization.
    • Terry, defines discipline as a means of mobilizing employees. So that every job can run smoothly, it must be endeavored to appear good discipline. According to Terry, discipline is not only related to punishment.
    • Latainer, the word discipline is interpreted as a strength that develops in the body of employees that causes employees to voluntarily adjust to decisions, regulations, and high values of work and behavior.
    • Beach, the word discipline is interpreted into two senses. First, discipline is defined as involving learning or printing behavior by applying a reward or punishment system. Second, discipline is interpreted only related to the act of punishment against the wrongdoers.
    • Heidjrachman and Husnan in Sinambela (2012: 238), the meaning of discipline is every individual or group that guarantees obedience to “orders” and takes the initiative to take actions that are needed in the absence of “orders”.

From some of the above disciplinary notions it can be concluded that discipline is a form of employee self-control and the implementation of management activities to carry out organizational standards.

The Purpose of Discipline

Discipline certainly has goals and benefits if applied. According to Simamora in Sinambela (2012: 243) discipline has the main goal as a disciplinary that is ensuring that employee behavior is consistent with the rules or regulations set by the organization.

All rules made and compiled by the organization are guidelines for realizing the goals of the organization set. If when a rule is violated, the effectiveness of the organization will be reduced to a certain degree, depending on the size of the violation. Another goal is to create or maintain respect and mutual trust between superiors and subordinates.

Discipline applied incorrectly can lead to problems such as low work morale, irritability, and bad desires between supervisors and subordinates. Under these conditions all improvements in employee behavior will only occur briefly, and supervisors must discipline employees again in a not too long period of time.

Correct implementation of disciplinary action will not only improve employee behavior, but will also minimize the risk of future disciplinary problems through positive relationships between subordinates and superiors. Applying discipline can also help employees to be more productive, so they can provide benefits in the long run. In addition, discipline can encourage employees to be able to improve performance which will ultimately result in individual achievement.

Apart from those described above, the discipline has several general objectives including the following:

  1. Command over oneself
  2. Control the power of self-will
  3. Correct bad habits
  4. Teach respect to parents and the divine
  5. Obey on the principle
  6. To develop an order in human action
