Differences between self-centered and narcissistic

The differences between  self-centered and narcissistic may go unnoticed by most people, but
these terms mean two very different things. An individual is self-centered when he is interested only in his needs. On the other hand, a narcissistic individual has an inflated sense of self-esteem.

An egocentric individual believes that he is in the spotlight. This characteristic can also be seen in a narcissistic individual. However, there are differences between these two individuals. One of the main differences that can be observed between an egocentric individual and a narcissistic individual is that a narcissistic individual is greatly affected by the opinions of others. They like and crave approval from others, but an egocentric individual does not work that way. Through this article, we will examine the main differences between self-centered and narcissistic and clear up this confusion.

What is self-centered?

An egocentric is extremely interested in his needs , and has a hard time understanding others. Such an individual cannot empathize with another  because he cannot identify the difference between the self and the other. When a person is self-centered, he  understands the world from his perspective.  This can be interpreted as a cognitive bias because the individual cannot see the world as he really does, but in his perspective. This can distort reality for the individual.

Egocentrism can be noticed at different stages of an individual’s life. However, according to Jean Piaget, a famous psychologist who studied development, egocentrism can be noticed in young children , mainly. Being self-centered can become a disadvantage for the child when he grows up, because he finds it difficult to empathize with others. Such an individual finds it difficult to accept the other’s perspectives and realities. This can even lead to anxiety and tension. Self-centered adults may have low self-esteem , and appear antisocial  when they find it difficult to communicate and relate to others.

Now, let’s move on to the next word: ‘narcissistic’.

What is narcissistic?

Narcissist  has an extreme self-esteem . Unlike the case of self-centeredness, the individual can understand the other, but as he is so caught up in his self-esteem, he shows a lack of interest in others . According to abnormal psychologists, narcissism can even be considered a mental disorder. This disease is known as narcissistic personality disorder .

A narcissistic individual can be  very ambitious and full of energy . Because of these characteristics, a narcissistic person can easily acquire leadership. However, this person needs to be praised and admired by others at all times. That is why it is correct to say that narcissistic individuals love to be in the spotlight . One of the important negative traits in a narcissistic person is the lack of accountability . A narcissistic person does not take responsibility for wrongdoing, but blames others. She is also emotionally unstable and can appear very aggressive and arrogant towards others. As you can see, there is aclear difference between an egocentric and narcissistic .

Now, let’s summarize the differences.
