Description of the Mountains in the Koran

Holy Quran and the mountains

A book called “Terra” is considered a basic reference text in many universities around the world. One of the authors of this book is the Frank Press. He is currently the president of the Academy of Sciences in the United States. Previously, he was the scientific advisor to former US President Jimmy Carter. Your book says that mountains have underlying roots [p. 435]. These roots are deeply embedded in the ground. So these mountains are shaped like a stake as seen in the example on page 220 in the same book. Another illustration shows how the mountains are in the shape of a stake, due to their deep roots [p.158].

Just as it is described in the Holy Quran about the mountains. God says:

“DIDN’T WE MAKE THE LAND A BED, AND THE MOUNTAINS, STAKES?”

[Holy Quran 78: 6-7]

Modern earth sciences have proven that mountains have deep roots under the surface of the soil, and that these roots can reach their elevations several times above the surface of the soil. So, the appropriate word to describe the mountains based on this information is the word ‘stake’, since most of the set is hidden under the surface. The history of science tells us that the theory of mountains with deep roots was only introduced in the second half of the 19th century. [Geological Concept of the Mountains p.5]

Mountains play an important role in stabilizing the earth’s crust. [Geological Concept of Mountains pp. 44-45]. They prevent the earth from shaking. God says in the Holy Quran:

“And he fixed solid mountains on the earth, lest it tremble with you…” [Holy Quran 16:15]

Likewise, modern plate tectonic theory holds that mountains function as stabilizers for Earth. This knowledge about the role of mountains as stabilizers for Earth has only begun to be understood in the concept of plate tectonics since the late 1960s.

Did anyone, during the time of the prophet Muhammad ﷺ know the true shape of the mountains? Could anyone imagine that the solid, massive mountain he sees in front of him, really extends deep into the earth and has a root, as scientists claim? A large number of geology books when discussing mountains, only describe the part that is above the Earth’s surface. This is because these books were not written by experts in geology. However, modern geology has confirmed the truth of the lines of the Holy Quran.
