Debra Evenson

Debra Evenson . American lawyer. Expert in matters related to the Cuban legal system. He wrote dozens of articles on Cuban law and the country’s institutions, which became an obligatory reference for studying relations between Cuba and the United States .

A graduate of Rutgers Law School , she was president of the National Lawyers Guild from 1988 to 1991 – an important union of lawyers in the United States , which supports the freedom of the Five Cubans imprisoned in that country – and worked for the law firm Rabinowitz, Boudin , Stanar, Krinsky and Lieberman in New York.

Biographical synthesis

She graduated from Barnard College in 1964 and received a law degree from Rutgers University in 1976. In that same year, she began working as an attorney in the litigation department of the law firm of Wilkie, Farr & Gallagher, where she remained until 1979 .

She was an Associate Professor at the DePaul University School of Law between 1980 and 1992 , when she left teaching to join the Firm as a consultant, dedicating herself exclusively to matters related to Cuba. During his time at DePaul University, he taught courses on Intellectual and Industrial Property Law, as well as Comparative International Law.

In 1991 , she was a visiting professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona , Spain , where she taught a course on United States Trademark Law. From 1996 to 2001, she was president of the Latin American Institute of Alternative Legal Services (ILSA), a non-governmental organization based in Bogotá , Colombia .

During his presidency, ILSA organized important conferences related to legal services and human rights in Latin America , Asia and Africa and expanded its collaboration with human rights defenders in South America , Central America and the Caribbean. She was president of the National Lawyers Guiad of the United States from 1988 to 1991.

Represented Cuba in some of the most important legal cases on the island before the courts of the United States. Debra also founded the Center for Inter-American Legal Education , a foundation dedicated to the exchange between American lawyers and their Latin American colleagues.

Death

Debra passed away in August 2011 in New York, a victim of cancer . Michael Krinsky, partner of Rabinowitz Boudin told the press upon hearing the news of Debra’s death:

“For 20 years, Debra was key to the legal defense of the sovereignty of Cuba” [1]

For his part, David Gespass , President of the National Bar Association, stated:

“Our loss is incalculable, but we are comforted to know that he had left behind so many others to carry out his mission” [1]
