Description
Fish with an elongated and cylindrical body that reaches 7.5 cm in length. Unlike the other species of blenidae, it lacks supraorbital tentacles, having only one appendix between the eyes of a triangular shape and of length equal to the ocular diameter, followed by others of smaller size, generally between 3 and 7. The mouth is large size and the upper lip forms a backward fold. The dorsal fin has 12-13 spiny rays and 15-17 soft rays, being highest at the rear; the anal has 2 prickly and 17 – 19 soft. The coloration varies since it is capable of adopting the coloration of the background; it is generally yellowish brown or greyish with 5 – 7 dark transverse bands that may appear as spots; during the fertile season the male turns completely gray and the lips and crest acquire a strongly yellowish tone.
Habitat
It lives in the intertidal zone and is able to withstand the dry period protected in the most humid areas, even breathing air. Ovoviviparous; the male attracts the female to the nest with rhythmic movements, which is a hole in the rock and once the eggs are laid they are protected by the male. Juveniles are found in tidal pools. They feed on barnacles, small crustaceans and algae.
