Corrugated cardboard

Corrugated cardboard. It is a structure formed by a central rib of corrugated paper (wave paper), externally reinforced by two layers of paper (liner papers or covers) glued to the ridges of the wave . It is a light material, whose resistance is based on the joint and vertical work of these three sheets of paper . To obtain its greatest resistance, the corrugated cardboard wave has to work vertically. An analogy can be made between the columns that corrugated cardboard forms and the columns of a construction.

Types of corrugated cardboard

Within the wide variety of possibilities that this cardboard offers, the following types can be distinguished mainly:

  • Simple cardboard (Single Face). It is a flexible structure formed by a wavy element (wave) glued to a flat element (liner).
  • Simple cardboard (Single Wall). It is a rigid structure formed by a wavy element ( wave ) glued on both sides to flat elements (liners).
  • Double cardboard (Double Wall). It is a rigid structure formed by three flat elements (liners) attached to two interspersed wavy elements (waves).

Corrugated cardboard basics

  • It is the geometric configuration given to a paper in a corrugating machine, for subsequent gluing to flat elements. We can differentiate three types of wave :
  • E (microcorrugated) Wave of smaller size than B, which is characterized by allowing a better impression to be achieved .
  • Wave Paper

It is the element that will form the undulation between the two caps. By extension, the material used for this purpose is called ” wave paper “.

  • Liners (Covers)

It is the flat element (s) of the corrugated cardboard. By extension, the one used for this purpose is also called ” cover paper “.

  • Plate (Mother Sheet)

It is a sheet of corrugated cardboard flat, defined by its width and length measurements. The width will always be parallel to the wave .

    • Plate thickness (Gauge)

It is the measurement between the two outer covers of a corrugated cardboard sheet. It is always expressed in millimeters.

Corrugated carton box

Rigid packaging formed by one or more corrugated cardboard sheets, joined or only cut, to allow the folds that will form the faces.

  • Box dimensions

Referring to the internal dimensions –which are defined below-, always measured in millimeters, in order of length x width x height.

  • Internal dimensions

Dimensions limited by the internal faces of a box.

  • Useful dimensions

Dimensions referred to the space occupied by the content.

  • Walls

Any face of a box, except the top or bottom. The two walls of larger area are called laterals and the two of smaller area are called heads.

  • Gualetas

Parts of the box that are folded to form the faces corresponding to the top and bottom. The gualetas of the heads, by bending first, are called internal; the side gualetas, because they are bent over the head gualetas, are called external gualetas. External gates are normally made from the butt.

  • Tongue

Extension, of special cut, in one or two end walls of the box, to be glued or sewn (bracketed) to the other end wall, forming the manufacturing joint of the box. It can be placed on the inside or outside of the box.

  • Die

Existing cuts in most of the boxes for the formation of the gualetas.

  • Lined

Slit, determined by crushing or by intermittent cutting (pre-cut), made with a special sheet, with or without cutting, to facilitate the uniform bending of the plate .

  • Manufacturing Union

Union, formed by means of glue or brackets, at the ends of the sheet that forms the corrugated cardboard box
