Connecting rod

Connecting rod . (From the French bielle ). Bar-shaped piece with joints at both ends, which in machines is used to transform the alternative rectilinear movement into one of rotation, or vice versa.

characteristics

Although it also has other uses, the connecting rod is a fundamental element in internal combustion engines and compressors to transmit the reciprocating and rectilinear movement of the piston in the circular movement that rotates the crankshaft. In the middle of its cycle it works in compression and in the rest in traction, but at the same time it undergoes bending efforts . They are usually constructed of high-strength tempered steel, formed by forging . There are holes in the head and foot for the lubricant to penetrate to the bearings.

Component parts

Component parts of the connecting rod.

Arm . It constitutes the central body, with cross section in H or in cross (+). At one end (head) it supports the crankshaft , and at the other (foot) it supports the piston .

Head . It is an independent piece that is attached with screws to the arm and together with it forms the hole with the largest diameter, which is the one that connects to the crankshaft.

Foot . It is the end that has a hole that carries a pressure bearing through which the cylindrical bar or tube that holds the piston passes.

Bearings . They are of two types: those of the head, called segments, since each one forms an arch; and that of the foot hole, in the form of a cap . They are made of antifriction metal . The bearings are essential elements and must be properly calibrated so that they fit with a very precise tolerance so that they neither block the assembly nor have free play. The games that occur when worn wear knock that quickly damages the shaft.
